I noticed my cat was drinking lots of water. In am a stage 4breast cancer patient and I am really attached to my. Fur baby. She was then sitting by water bowl. Her fur looked good but not as pretty as usual took her to vet he said he did not think renal maybe thyroid. The early call next day told me otherwise. Her creaton was 2.8 and bun 36. He put her on KD which she loves. She has begun to drinknless water but fur still not as pretty as it was. I bring her back in a month to check numbers. Does anyone know how this is going to go? I just can't think of the worst....can she stabilize? He was very vague.

I am sorry about your health issues and all of us understand about being very attached to our fur babies.  Your vet was vague because it is different for each kitty.  Keeping an eye initially on numbers will tell a lot about progression.  http://www.felinecrf.org/   has a lot of info about this.  Several people here have been through this and I am sure someone with experience will chime in soon.

First, I'm so sorry about YOUR diagnosis.  The last thing you  need to worry about is your furbaby
.  However,  her numbers don't appear to be too high yet, and hopefully since she likes the kidney food they won't get higher for a long time.

That website Denice referenced is a wonderful tool for anyone who has a kidney cat.  I have one, and I refer to that site constantly.  My own little one will not eat K/D, so I use that site to help me chose other foods that aren't too bad for her.  I also use it to help me with other things, like when she throws up froth,  etc.  I don't know what country you live in, but even if you are in Europe or Canada, this website helps with where to buy supplies, etc. when it gets to the point where you might need to give sub-q fluids, etc.  I don't know which K/D you are feeding, but kidney cats need lots of fluids, so if you are feeding the canned form, it's not a bad idea to add in a little extra water into the food.  If you are feeding kibble, then it's REALLY a good idea to encourage her to drink extra water.  Yes, drinking more is a sign of kidney disease, but they need it to help flush out the toxins....that's why at some point almost all kidney cats do need to have sub-q fluids given on sometimes a daily basis.  Mine doesn't get them yet, but a previous cat got them every other day for almost a year.

Here's an article to help increase her drinking:  http://www.thecatsite.com/a/tips-to-increase-your-cat-s-water-intake

for BOTH of you

Thank you so much. I have been on this site today...very helpful I am glad now to have it. I put a teaspoon water on wet food. She was also losing weight. Is that common? I am from US. Texas. It was awful she just sat by her bowl but now not so much. I will check out the site you sent. I have had breast cancer for 16 years but now has gone to liver and lungs. Fighting though!!!! Thank you again

Losing weight is VERY common for kidney cats.  All of mine (I'm on my third right now
) have eventually ended up being just skin and bones.  Kidney cats are not usually in pain, but at times they just don't feel well.  And that causes a lack of appetite as toxins built up.  My last guy was on Pepcid A/C twice a day, and Ranitudine three times a day just to try to keep his tummy feeling better.  Plus fluids every other day to try to flush out his kidneys.  And he still barely ate at all.   But I told him all he needed to do was tell me when he was ready to go and I would let him, and finally, just shy of three years after his diagnosis, he told me he was ready, and I let him go
.  BUT, your little one is eating well
, and canned k/d no less, so that's GREAT
.

Kidney Disease definitely is a roller coaster though.  Good days and bad days.  Just don't panic if there are days of very little eating, as long as they are followed by days of eating well.  For instance, yesterday my girl just picked at her food all day, but today she had 1.3 oz  just for breakfast.  (she normally only eats .5 oz of canned for breakfast, so I'm thrilled with this amount, even though it sounds so small
...she currently weighs less than 5 lbs, but don't worry, I try to feed her at least 4 meals a day, AND supplement her with other things.

Keep on fighting

My cat was diagnosed stage two. They put her on KD and its been a while snd other then losing weight she did good. She got tired of fish and chicken KD. They came out with new tuna stew and chicken. She loved it.it's a can like fancy feast. She eats over three small cans a day. Now she is not drinking water. Is it because this food provides enough? Worried

Was the K/D she was eating before DRY?  If so, then it not too unusual that she isn't drinking too much now that she is eating 3 cans a day.  Canned food has so much more moisture in it than dry food.  I rarely see my cats at the water bowl since we switched over to wet food. Be sure to keep providing fresh water for her though, because I'll bet she is still drinking some, maybe during the night while you're sleeping.   She's still urinating plenty, right?
