Hey y'all I have a question for you cat rescuers. It's my first time rescuing a kitten from outside. Our current cat we have, craigslist helped out as someone had found a mother with kittens in the dumpster. Anyways when my room mate and I were trying to rescue the little guy (he's tiny) he managed to sink a couple of teeth into my finger. It's a little red and tender today, but I don't have insurance so heading to the E.R. would cost me a fortune that I cannot feasibly pay right now as a college student. I just don't want to put this off and it become something worse that would cost me even more. I'm considering going to a minor emergency and just biting the bullet as to keep my finger healthy. The kitten seems to have puss coming from his eyes and has a puss pocket on his nose like he got scraped on his face or something. We're making a vet appointment to get the little guy checked out this week and get him on some shots soon. It doesn't look like rabies, but we're keeping him away from our other animals just in case. The poor thing was locked in one of those storage crates behind Target so I'm guessing he sneaked in while someone wasn't looking because I hate to think that an employee intentionally locked the little guy in there. Either way we're taking care of him and discussing either finding him a home or us keeping him, as he would just add to our crazy pack of animals that we love. Sorry that was a bunch but any info would be great! Thanks guys!

One thing I would do is get a tetanus shot and maybe an antibiotic.  It sounds more like he has an upper respiratory infection, which you can't get, although he may also have bacteria that could give you an infection where he bit you.

The vet may be required by law to quarantine the kitten (although I, too, don't think its rabies).  If so, he will probably have to keep him at his office, so be prepared for that.  They may allow you to keep him at home but he will have to be kept from you other animals until rabies is absolutely ruled out.

Thank you for helping him.  Sounds like he lucked out with you!

Keeping him for himself from your residents is wise by itself, any suspicion of rabies shouldnt really have nothing about it.  He has hardly rabies, but has surely other problems.  Almost surely worms, perhaps fleas.  So a quarantine for about two weeks is wise, till you are entirely sure he is healthy.

And this pus-problem, who surely need to see a vet.  Which you are going to do, good.

Re your finger...  Im not sure what you do have and what you can do.  Of course take care of that sore as well as you can.  As said, the danger for rabies is practically nonexistent, but the sores can be inflammed anyways.  There can be lotsa of bacteria in cats mouths anyway.   And  even bacteria on your own skin, who got in once the skin got punctated, and they prob pressed in...

Was the wound deep, or more of a scratch?   Deep wounds can get inflammation near your tendons and so.   The shallow scrates arent SO dangerous, but can get inflammed anyway...

Good luck!

Use some hydrogen peroxide to cleanse the bite.  Use it 3 times daily.  That will help clear out any bacteria and let it heal.

Take him to a vet for a check, sounds like he needs some meds to help with the issues he has.  Depending on how it looks, I wouldn't even bother telling the vet about the bite.

Just my thoughts.
