Hi Everyone,

I've read that black, tarry poop can indicate blood in the gastrointestinal tract. My kitty is having some issues, and so I'm hoping someone can tell me what's going on before I decide if he needs a vet trip.

I have an 8 year-old tabby. He first started having issues with crystals in his bladder about 6 months ago, so he was switched entirely to the Hills Prescription Diet. Aside from some tuna now and then and a few slivers of protein from my dinner or lunch (like deli turkey or chicken breast), this is all he eats. I also will treat him to Whiskas Temptations, not sure how relevant this is.

Earlier this week he started acting a little odd, to the point that it was noticeable. He started clawing and gently biting my legs when I was sitting at at the computer, something in which he had never done before. He was always a little more whiny than usual (he's a talker), and kind of giddy. This went on until earlier today, when he went to the bathroom. I went to look at the litter box (I use pine litter) and noticed his bowel movement was black (with a bit of brown spots) in color, but it wasn't a tarry consistency. It's shape and consistency was normal, but just really black.

I guess my question here is this something I should be concerned about, or is this normal occasionally? He's add the occasional tuna treat in the 4 years he's been with me, but I've never encountered an issue (and the vet said it was fine for him). I just don't need more worry, I nearly lost it earlier this year with his crystal issue (I had to find a way to collect a urine sample from him and he was in obvious pain which really killed me). He's still got a long life ahead of him it's just hard to see something you care about go through anything that's rough.

He's been fine behavioral wise since he went to the bathroom. Could this has caused the abnormalities from earlier this week?

Thanks for your assistance.

I can't seem to find the edit function in the post, but I wanted to add this.

I had thought he was getting "back to normal", but he's clearly in discomfort. He's been standing in corners, hiding behind the bedroom door, not purring, and is acting quite aggressive if I try to pet him (he'll wash me at first then start biting and clawing). He's the happiest, easiest go-lucky cat I've ever had the opportunity to call my own, so this is all a bit discerning. Either way I'll be taking him to the vet this week but I still hope for some insight from some other posters to put my mind at ease.

I tend to over think and overreact. especially with a furry loved one.

We're lay people rather than vets here, so it's difficult to even venture a guess. What you describe does give cause for concern, so it would be best for you to take him to your vet as soon as possible.

This could be a serious condition as it may be an indication of bleeding.  See this article below and I suggest a vet visit with stool sample ASAP.
