I just rescued a 5 month old feral and he or she is not eating and always trying to hide.  We brought her in from the garage in a large cage to inside the home and she does feel more comfortable  But, she hisses and growls at me when I get too close.

Socializing a feral cat is hard work that takes lots of patience.  It can also be so rewarding!  You will need to spend as much time with her as possible.  Sit on the floor next to the crate and read out loud to her.  This will allow her to get used to your voice and your presence.

Always move slowly and deliberately and never reach an open hand toward her (that looks the way a predator might look).  Tell her what you are doing in a soft, calm voice (we're going to scoop your poops now").  You may sound like an idiot to people but it is the cat you're worried about!

As soon as possible, have her spayed and get her vaccinations.  The vet may want to test her stool as well for parasites.  Once she is spayed, she will calm down.  Once she is vet-checked, knowing she's healthy, you can concentrate on socializing her.

Thank you for taking on this challenge!
