Lens luxation

My approximate 10 year old cat (with kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, and herpes)  came down with lens luxation last night.  The lens is at the right front of the eye now.  He is on eye drops(anti glaucoma and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drops) and buprenex for pain.

The vet wants to pull the lens out and then my cat will have far sightedness in that eye. The other choice is to have him on meds for rest of his life or until something else goes wrong with the eye and it has to be removed.  With the meds, his eye blood pressure is under control now at 22.  We have a trip planned out of the country from Nov 8 thru 13 so have to wait until after that to have his surgery.

Any one had experience with this surgery for their cat?  I am a little confused as we were told we could control it with meds but I have also read the surgery needs to be done soon after the lens luxation.

I have no experience with this with any of my cats, but if surgery would prevent a lifetime of meds, I would think that might be the better option, particularly if those meds include steroids and pain meds.  What does your Vet advise, though, since he has the other medical issues?  Could any of those meds he would be on long term (without the surgery) cause further damage to his kidney's and/or thyroid?

Thanks for your reply MrsGreenJeans .

The meds are eye drops so I doubt they effect the thyroid or kidney.  I am not sure if he would have to take pain meds the rest of his life and will be asking that question next week when I meet the eye specialist.

I had to drop my cat off in an emergency situation so didn't get to meet the eye specialist.  I spoke with her on the phone but all of this took me so by surprise that I didn't ask all the right questions.

I meet with my regular vet tomorrow and get his opinion.  I was hoping to find someone on this board that had experiences either with or without the surgery.  I guess this isn't a common thing.  The lens luxation can be caused by continual inflammation and I believe the Herpes virus is probably responsible for inflammation in his eye.

Yes, I was thinking it was probably the Herpes that brought it on
And even though there are lots of cat people with Herpes cats on this board, I've still never encountered one with this particular issue here.  I've read it's more common in dogs than in cats.

We HAVE had cats who had to have their eyes removed for various reasons (some herpes related), but still can't recall any luxating lens issues
