I'm in desperate need of advice. I've had my cat, Asher, for 8 years (he's about 8 years old). I've originally got him while living with my mom and dad, and then just living with my mom after they divorced. For the past few years my cat, Asher, has been prone to peeing on the carpet (we would use a professional carpet cleaner about once a month). I scoop the litter box once a day and change the entire litter every 2-4 weeks. I have 2 cats and I don't have this problem with my other cat, Fitch (7 years old). In August, my mom had the carpets professionally cleaned which costed her about $600. She started locking him in the bathroom with a litter box, food, and water about a month ago because it's tiled and she had just spent so much money on the carpet cleaning. The bathroom is probably like 15 feet by 5 feet.

I've been mostly living with my significant other for the past 6 months, and can't move Asher and Fitch with us. I try to come by every day but it's usually every other day. I noticed Asher has lost weight, and I think is depressed and confused. My heart was broken yesterday because when I went to my mom's place and let him out of the bathroom, he was walking weird... like he was dizzy.I can't afford to move out on my own. He only gets out of the bathroom when I come over and let him out. I really do love Asher, I thought by now I would be in a different place, but now he's stuck at my mom's and it's a burden on her. The only thing I can think of is clearing out my old room (which is MUCH bigger than the bathroom) and keeping him in there. Any other tips or advice are VERY welcome.

This is a tough one. At first I would have suggested getting 2 litter boxes when asherpeed on the carpet. Also he may have peed the carpet cause the litter box was nasty. So change it more frequently could avoid that.

Being locked in the bathroom is probably stressful for Asher. Stress is not good for cats it triggers all sorts of diseases. Don't put the food next to the litter box. Cats don't eat where they ****.

Has he been seen by a vet? The most common cause of inappropriate peeing is bladder trouble, so get your vet to rule out an infection or inflammation first. Male cats are prone to these and they're very painful. Acting dizzy is a worry too. I don't think just being locked in the bathroom would cause that. You should mention that to the vet.

If that's not the trouble the first thing to do is get an enzyme cleaner to clean the carpet with. This will get rid of the smell of the urine. He can still smell it even if you can't so he'll think it's the right place to pee.

Your room sounds like it will be more comfortable than the bathroom. Two litter boxes, a cat condo, bed and food should keep him happy until you can visit him again.

But please go to the vet first. If left untreated urinary tract infections can be fatal.
