The H&G food my IBD cat gets is currently "out of stock" everywhere on god's green earth.  And now my other kitties are starting to prefer it to their Instinct, so this is an all-around frustrating situation!  Can I temporarily substitute the dog food if I supplement with taurine?

Here are ingredient lists for the dog formulas (gums are high on the list due to minimal ingredients; it's virtually 100% meat):

Chicken, Water, Xanthan Gum, Potassium Chloride, Cassia Gum, Choline Chloride, Guar Gum, Calcium Carbonate, Tricalcium Phosphate, Salt, Iron Proteinate, Zinc Proteinate, Vitamin Supplement, Copper Proteinate, Manganese Proteinate, Riboflavin Supplement, Selenium Yeast, Kelp, Thiamine Mononitrate, Vitamin A Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Potassium Iodide, Biotin, Vitamin D3 Supplement

Lamb, Duck Liver, Water, Calcium Carbonate, Xanthan Gum, Cassia Gum, Potassium Chloride, Tricalcium Phosphate, Guar Gum, Salt, Choline Chloride, Magnesium Proteinate, Iron Proteinate, Zinc Proteinate, Vitamin E Supplement, Copper Proteinate, Manganese Proteinate, Riboflavin Supplement, Selenium Yeast, Kelp, Thiamine Mononitrate, Vitamin A Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Potassium Iodide, Biotin, Vitamin D3 Supplement

Rabbit, Water, Duck Liver, Xanthan Gum, Cassia Gum, Potassium Chloride, Guar Gum, Choline Chloride, Salt, Calcium Carbonate, Iron Proteinate, Zinc Proteinate, Vitamin Supplement, Copper Proteinate, Manganese Proteinate, Riboflavin Supplement, Selenium Yeast, Kelp, Thiamine Mononitrate, Vitamin A Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Potassium Iodide, Biotin, Vitamin D3 Supplement

Beef, Water, (Sufficient For Processing), Guar Gum, Liver, Vitamins (Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin Supplement, L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate [Source of Vitamin C], Thiamine Mononitrate [Source of Vitamin B1], Calcium Pantothenate, Vitamin A Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride [Source of Vitamin B6], Riboflavin Supplement [Source of Vitamin B2], Folic Acid, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Biotin, Vitamin D2 Supplement), Minerals (Zinc Sulfate, Ferros Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Manganese Sulfate, Selenium Yeast, Potassium Iodide).

Any input welcome!

Edit: It has to be kitten appropriate, btw!

You have to be very cautious about feeding dog food (or any other food not specifically balanced to a cat's needs) as cats are not able to process certain vitamines and proteins that they need unless they are available through a meat source rather then vegetable, and have different balances of nutritional componants to dogs too.  It is  more complex than just Taurine.  Arginine is particularly important as a protein that they can not make in their body and they have to get this from their diet.  Some are compounds that dogs do not need at all and it is likely the food will be deficient.  As kittens are growing and developing very quickly they have high nutritional needs and, just like humans, if they do not get good and balanced nutrition in their early lives they will experience health problems for the rest of their life.  Please try to source some form of kitten or cat food rather than feeding the dog food while this supply problem continues.

Yeah, I've been feeling less and less comfortable about that option, even as a temporary measure.  Especially since I have a chronically ill cat and kittens with specific dietary needs.  We're going to stick with Instinct for now while I try to find a reputable source for H&G (in cases, since someone did recommend a good site for individual cans).

A company rep said they recently changed their policy on ingredient sourcing (they've gotten more stringent, which is always good news!), so that explains the shortages.  Stores are supposed to be receiving new inventory now.

Good luck finding your preferred food types soon.  It sounds like you have been doing quite a bit of research on the different options and makes of food out there so good for you, your cats are very lucky.
