I had 2 cats one was 2 1/2 year old boy and the other 3 year old female. They were extremely healthy and would eat and play all the time. Suddenly a week or so ago my male kitty became very weak and could barely walk. He was also noticeably cold to the touch even his paws and stomach. He was not eating or drinking and within 24 hours couldn't even get up to urinate. I took him to the vet the next morning and had to put him to sleep because the vet said he was critical but didn't notice anything by the basic exam that would indicate why.. he seemed perfectly healthy other than the recent symptoms. It broke my heart.

The next week my female was still eating drinking and going to the bathroom but did seem very lazy but I assumed she was depressed and heart broken since her brother was gone. Then exactly 1 week later I couldn't find her but had seen her in the morning so I looked everywhere and finally found her stiff as a board and gripped on the carpet in my closet behind my hamper. She was dead.

What could this be?

Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear this happened. Are you able to get one or both necropsied? It's impossible to say on the surface if they were acting fine normally and these symptoms were so sudden.

That would be my fear too. Has anyone in the household felt ill? Any changes in their food? It's such a scary idea that anything could have the potential to harm our loved ones and not know what it is. Things like carbon monoxide or nasty things coming through pipes into your water sources would have an effect on everyone in the home (to varying degrees), so something to consider is whether or not everyone else in the home has been well during this time.

I'm so sorry.  Did anything change in your environment?  Do you have any plants (certain plants are toxic to cats)?  Could they have gotten into any medication or pills? Did you change their food?  Could they have gotten into the trash and eaten something? Do they go outside?  I once had an outdoor cat who got bitten by something. Now, I keep my fur babies indoors.

I hope that you figure out what happened so you don't live in fear and you can move forward.
