Hello, new to this site...my family and I currently have a 5 year old torte(female/fixed) her name is Beans. Tonight we picked up a kitten that is 8 weeks old, I prepped by reading other forums, we put the new kitty in the bathroom with food, water ect, we have not introduced beans to her yet. I have sat in there and she hisses and is very low to the ground...I'm not pushing myself on her, any other advice is this normal?

Welcome to TCS!

Yes it is normal.  If you have not read it already; this article details how to introduce cats to cats.

Your new one is very young and needs time to adjust.  I would sit in there with her; but sit on the floor quietly.  Let her smell you.  You can read a book out loud in a calm voice and that will help her get comfortable with you too.  Of course as you feed her that helps her see you are a friend.

As far as introductions; take it slow and follow the cat's lead as detailed in the article above.  For some cats; patience really is key.  It's a little easier to go slow and backup if needed then to rush and have to start things from the beginning.

Does the kitten have somewhere soft to curl up in there?  She might enjoy a stuffed animal either a little bigger than herself or say "mama cat" size.  My Noodles used to carry around a stuffed bunny when she was about a year or so old.  I know some people who foster that have a stuffed cat the kittens seem to all like as well.

Good luck!!

Oh; I love that you have a cat named Beans.  My "soul-kitty" went by Beans most of her life.  Her name was Morning Glory; but she was a jumpy little thing.  My Mom said she was like a jumping bean and Beans stuck.  She has been gone for 13 years and I still miss her.
