Well, a cat that has been the "only child" for so long is going to have a much harder time accepting another.  Cats don't like change as a general rule anytime, but especially not as they get to the double digits.  I am not saying it's hopeless.  But the best you can hope for is a peaceful coexistence between them at least.  I would strive for that.  First, were they ever separated and properly introduced?  If not, do that now.  Keep them separated for a week, a week and a half.  You can try the calming collar (I have had lots of success with it) or Feliway diffusers (I've never had much success with these but others have).  Build up both cats self esteem during separation.  After initial separation, start the reintroduction process very slowly.  Keep it brief so not to stress out either cat.  Many have luck with food.  Positive reinforcement is what it is called professionally.  Get down on the floor with both cats, holding one as the other kind of walks around.  All the while talking in a soothing voice with praise.  Offer them both treats or food.  After awhile food is not needed because they now associate each other with something positive.  Like I said, keep it short.  Only a few minutes at a time.  Expect hissing, growling, and some swatting.  Do not react.  Just separate and try again later.  Praise is key.  Praise for every good interaction lots and lots.  No negativity.  Just remain calm and separate and try again later.
