Any ideas on how to get rid of tar on a cat's foot?

My Pushy just walked over a patch of tar seal on the driveway. The patches were done over two weeks ago, but this product hasn't set properly and is still quite sticky. He got a little patch stuck on his front paw. I've managed to get most of it off by very carefully cutting the fur from in between his paw pads. Obviously he's a very good little kitty to let me do this!
There's still a small bit staining the fur and I can't cut it out as it's too close to the skin. Any ideas on what to use to remove the tar? I don't want him ingesting this when he grooms himself.

Mayonnaise or mineral or olive oil. Apply to kitty and try to keep it on there for 30 minutes-wrap the foot in gauze and tape I guess to cover the goop. Then after time is up mechanically work on tar with your fingers. After removed wash and rinse oily product from paw.

I found this on a site to remove tar from humans. I do not think these items harmful to cats if they ingest a bit. If you do it as instructed kitty won't be able to get at it.

If kitty won't keep it on for long you still may have luck with shorter times.

You have done the right thing by cutting off the hair as best you could.  For any leftover tar, cover it with any edible oil (coconut, olive, vegetable oil) for a little while to soften it and then shampoo out with a mild dish detergent or baby shampoo.

Thanks for the quick replies!
I managed to get a little more hair off. Then I used a Q Tip to put mineral oil on. There was only a tiny stain of tar left, but I figured it would be worth trying to remove it if I can. He hasn't licked his paw at all yet. He's been such a good kitty! I distracted him with throwing some Temptations, always works. :)
