Hi there,

I have an adorable 18 month old cat, and has been diagnosed with a grade 3 luxating patella requiring surgery.  I would like to ask if anyone has managed this condition:

a) without surgery with no poor outcomes

b) where spontaneous healing has occurred

c) used alternative treatments

The reason being she is an indoor cat, and is not super active, and it does not appear to be giving her pain or discomfort.

I would welcome any views where someone looked at their case on balance, as I am aware of the long term risks of arthritis.

However am slightly sceptical, given its often in the vet interests to suggest surgery.  She is on the best food, and gets good intakes of omega 3s, so before I put her through this ordeal, I want reassurance that this is the correct course of action for her.

Thanks for any advice on this,

I can tell you both my small dogs had their back legs done. It is a genetic defect. My dogs are brothers. I had all 4 legs done. Vet said they would end up crippled if not fixed, so I did. They are 14 now and still trucking with arthritis of course.

They are 14 now and still trucking with arthritis of course. I had to hold them up for a while so they could go to bathroom. The one that had both legs done at same time started walking sooner than one who and each leg separately (he hopped for a long time). The other one had no choice so he used his leg sooner.
