I have a question for y'all. This could be a completely unfounded observation, but I figured here would be the place to get set straight if I'm wrong!

Do kitten coats go through phases? What I mean is this: 3 years ago, I adopted one moderately fluffy kitten. He thinned out to be almost short haired looking for a few months during middle kittenhood (4-6months) and in his seventh month POOF! Back comes Mr. Fluffy in all his hairy splendor. Two weeks ago I adopted him a moderately fluffy friend, a baby girl, at 10 weeks. This past week she started shedding for the first noticeable time and she is looking rather more like a short haired cat now. I started to get kind of bummed, of course I love her no matter what, but I do love fluffy kitties. Only time will tell what she will be, but she'll be great no matter what (buff and white tabby).

I am slightly wondering if she is going through the same thing my older cat went through- I know only time will tell for sure, but it is a curiosity haha.

They are both strictly indoors, so I imagine any seasonal changes in their coats would be minimal.

Thanks!

Alright, I did some digging and found this tid bit from an entire study on kitten coat development.

"The hair of a kitten is just baby hair.  Kittens can shed and regrow  hair often during growth.  Some kittens grow their bodies and outgrow their hair. The hair seems to get shorter, when only the kitten has gotten bigger.  A  kitten that  is longhair at birth will growup to be a longhair when it becomes an adult.  Adult age is when a cat is fully mature.  This is usually at 2 to 3 years of age.  The first adult coat comes in after 7 months of age, still part baby coat .  The first  winter as an adult, your Selkirk Rex will grow a true adult coat.   Longhair kittens have a plume-like tail and a ruff around thier neck.  Shorthair  kittens never have a ruff and the hair on their tail is the same length.

What can be judged about kitten coat is density.  The baby's coat should be thick.

We will talk about  homozygous kittens, and how their coat developes, further on in this article."

Neat! Crazy how 7 months really is the first adult coat! While the kitties in the study are kind of strange looking (to me anyway haha) it's still a neat read :)

That is really interesting!  I'll have to go back and look at Mooch & Noodles' baby pictures.  It's been a while since I've had a kitten in the house.  At this point it's hard to remember exactly how their coats felt when they were 5-6 months old.

Hey, I know this is pretty old, but I was wondering about how your kitties coat turned out? I have a similar situation with two kitties that were very fluffy when I got them, but now at around 4 months their hair is getting pretty short.
