Hi,

I am very worried and I need an advice from someone who knows better than me. I rescued a homeless cat exactly 5 days ago. He is very lovely, friendly and calm. Around 4 months old.

I gave him Frontline Plus drops on the second day to remove his fleas, which were so much. He started meowing like crazy on the next day and he tried to escape from my windows. He didn't stop meowing and running around my flat for an hour, doing everything possible to jump from the windows. I thought it is the effect from the medicine. I knew that his skin will be scratchy and it takes up to 24 hours for the fleas to die. So I hoped for the best and we passed through that together.

But he did it on the next day too. Today he did again and I just can't take it anymore. He is a good boy all day, but then all of the sudden he will switch for an hour and will start meowing super loud while jumping on the windows and trying to get out.

I am doing all I can to make him happy, best food I could find, best conditions I can offer, very calm with him, talking to him like he is my friend. But I have the feeling that this will not stop and I feel like he is trying to tell me something. If only I could talk... meow in his language, so I can understand what he feels.

Do you think that he is doing that because he wants to be let free? Or is there something else? In all cases, what should I do? I feel helpless, please advice me.

Hi Catt,

Thank you for taking this boy in and giving him a new home. Four month old kittens are little bundles of energy. One thing that will help to calm him down is play. You need a wand toy, something like a fishing rod with feathers or a cat nip mouse on the end as "bait" that you can use to play with him and wear him out.

It's very likely that he feels confused in his new home, especially if he is used to being outside. Once he gets used to your routine  he'll start to relax but even older cats have their "Crazy hour" where they run around the house to burn off energy. You said that he is a good boy most of the time, which makes me think he is settling in well and just needs to let off steam. A Feliway diffuser is another way to calm him down, but if you can distract him with a toy it will wear him out, keep him happy and help the two of you to bond.
