I've seen this orange tabby cat named 'Rain' in my neighborhood a lot,hes not neutered and had a blue collar on. Today i was on my porch when he surprisingly came over to me when i saw him from across the yard,he had no collar on though for some reason. He was very friendly and i gave him some bread (because we own no cat food) he seemed to eat the bread very quickly and loved it,he even ran after a piece when i threw it. Then at around 10:00 P.M he came to my porch again,i thought it was strange because who would have there cat out at 10:00 pm,especially  when we live in a neighborhood with coyotes in it. He wanted to go inside the house, and when i left the door open for a bit he ran in (i had to let him back out) it was about  57 degrees and very cold, and was going to be 49 that night, when i had to go inside to go to bed,he quickly ran over to the door and tried to get in again. I'm starting to think that maybe his owners just ditched him,but i'm not sure and  i have no idea who owns Rain, and we have a lot of houses in my neighborhood,so it would be hard to go around and look. What do i do? Any suggestions?  Could be possibly be a stray now?

You could take a picture of him and post a few fliers around or even go door to door and hand them out.  If he seems hungry, you could decide to get some cat food and feed him and see what happens.  If after a week no one responds, I would assume he is now a stray.  If you decide to take care or ownership of him, you need to get him neutered.  It seems he is friendly enough that you could get him into a carrier and off to a vet.  The vet could check for a microchip  too.

Thank you for caring for this boy.  I hope you are able to find his owners or take care of him.

There is a site called Petfbi.com where you can post about lost/found pets.

I second a lot of what ShadowsRescue says.  Neutering/vet check as soon as you can.

Print up some flyers and maybe post online.  If you do anything online, use a vague description, as unfortunately sometimes people claim pets who aren't their own to sell or use in dog fights.

Are you able keep him?  If not, can you find a local rescue to help you find him his home (or a new home)?  I suspect you are correct - he was probably dumped or abandoned.  Your vet may have some tips or be able to help, too.

Blessings on you for helping him!

I agree. And frankly if he were owned, he was owned by people who don't care enough given that he is unneutered and are letting him roam.
Thank you for taking care of him.

Thanks for the help guys! He hasn't come back yet,but i'm still on the lookout for him. I don't know who the owners are,but i'm pretty sure someone stills own him, this happened to my neighbors they found  a cat they thought was a stray, they fed it and eventually wanted to keep it. They found out it was owned but the owner let them keep the cat. I'm afraid to do anything because someone still owns him,and my parents are not cat lovers, which is very sad. For now i'm gonna let him visit and possibly (if luck is on my side) the owners may let me have him since they don't seem to care much for him. He is a very sweet cat.

Quick update: Rain came back! And he seemed way more clingy,he was following me around everywhere i went, and begged for more food. I found out where the owners live and i heard they had a lot of pest and were kinda mean. My neighbors carried one of there cats with a hurt paw to there house and they didn't seem to care about it. They tried moving away multiple times and i don't know if they moved yet or not,i'm going to head over there and find out though.  Really hope these people didn't ditch Rain,he is the sweetest cat i've ever met!

Hopefully if he was left behind you can care for him or find a home for him.  Thank you for caring about Rain.

Last update: I found the owners, they are the people that have tried to sell there house multiple times. Upon talking to the "owner"  i found out that Rain's collar broke.  When i stated i fed the cat the 'owner' said 'Ya,i feed the cat sometimes" that horrified me,also the cat isn't neutered  and the family doesn't even shelter the cat. This makes me so mad that these people don't even seem to care about this cat,i know he would be in much better care if he lived with anyone else. Obviously i can't buy the cat from them, but i will continue to feed it and shelter it if i see it during cold winter nights or during Halloween.

Thank you for continuing to care for this care by feeding and giving it shelter.  Is it possible to ask the owners why they have not neutered the cat they allow to roam outside?   I guess it is possible to take the cat to a vet and get it neutered.  I just hate to see cats that are able to be neutered allowed to roam free.  He is gentle and kind and needs a loving home.  Yet with his hormones raging there will be times in his life when the hormones rule.  He will roam, and fight and do  whatever to find a mate.

I hope you can do whatever you can to help sweet Rain.

Their behavior tells me they might not care what happens to him.  You will be doing the entire neighborhood a favor by neutering him and possible finding him a new home.  Thank you for caring!

You don't need to worry about buying the cat from them. Simply ask if you can assume responsibility for the cat, and of course they will say yes, or that they don't care one way or the other. Ask your parents to help you find a low cost spay/neuter clinic and see if they will help you get this done for Rain. Also get him vaccinated for rabies and de-wormed. He can be your outdoor cat if your parents won't allow you to bring him inside. You can make him a nice outdoor pet house or shelter like many of us have done for our outdoor ferals. Then you will have peace of mind because he will stay close to your home instead of wandering and fighting, and if he's social towards people, you can find him a good home. Your parents could help you with that.  They may even be so impressed with the care you are giving this cat, they may allow you to take him in even though they are not cat lovers. Good luck!

Thanks for all the care guys, sadly Rain has not been at my house at all since i talked to the owners. Since theres an outside cat, theres nothing i can do,right now I'm seeing if i could possibly adopt a cat and i am trying to convince my parents,if i see rain again during a cold winter night,i will definitely have him shelter in our garage.
