Hi Friends-

I have some unfortunate news after using Bayer Advantage on our cat.

We had used Frontline Plus on his successfully, but we decided to give bayer advantage a try because the Frontline was wearing off after 2-3 weeks.

Unfortunately, our little buddy developed a patch of hairloss about 12 hours after treatment. He was itching it like a storm and the hair came out in that area.

Of course we feel awful and it seems like this sometimes happens.  the question is - now what? He seems to be eating, peeing, pooping, and drinking water.  Besides sometimes itching he seems ok, still cuddling.

We didn't contact the vet because we weren't sure they would do anything. It seems like nothing can be done at this point.

Has anyone who has had similar experiences chime in with what to expect?  Does anyone think the hair will grow back?

I think we are done treating him for fleas and will focus on using Diatamaceous Earth and other natural remedies.  We have been doing everything we are supposed to do for the fleas and we have had no luck!

Thanks for your advice.

You need to report it to the vet so that it can be filed with the appropriate authorities (FDA? I think).  Also, you might find that you need medication to treat the site of the hair loss.

Thanks Stephanie we will report. But was hoping for what others experiences were since this is a common problem!

I haven't had problems with Advantage (it's one product I can use on all my cats;) but, I have several that have experienced fur loss with other products. For some, the hair falls out at application site and that is it. Others get a sore at the site. The hair does eventually grown back...how long that takes depends on severity of reaction.

Since you're more than a day out from applying, the odds of him having any further reactions are slim (Advantage is not absorbed into the bloodstream.) Those of mine that have had further reactions (vomiting, etc) all did so within 8 hrs of application...not to say that it's not possible to have reactions after this time period; but, it's much less likely.

I had used Revolution on the cats that had reactions hours after application (Revolution IS absorbed into the bloodstream.)

I had this happen with Abby. Other than the hair loss she was fine after. I did report it to the vet so it would go into her file and it wouldn't be given to her again.
