No he doesn"t.  He has dementia and she is his companion cat and she puts him to bed every night and snuggles him when he is restless.

I bet she'd like Tiny. He's a certified emotional support animal, and right now, he is trying to get me to go to bed because he knows it's past my bedtime. I am pretty sure he thinks I am a big furless kitten. :)

I find this very touching.  My heart goes out to you that your father has dementia, but how wonderful that he has a furry friend who can calm him.

Yeah, this is why ESAs (emotional support animals) are a real thing. A cat doesn't need to be a trained service animal to provide a link to the world that someone with dementia can catch hold of. An ESA is special because people who have ESAs need that link with another living creature so much more than most people do--they have a disability or a mental or physical illness; they're elderly or isolated. ESAs to these people are as much medicine to them as food is medicine to someone who is starving. It's not just some spoiled brat who wants to avoid pet rent; it's someone who literally needs that contact to live a fulfilling, satisfying life.

It rather annoys me that people don't realize that even ESAs, with their lack of training and without legal permission to accompany their owners into pet-free zones, are not just pets. They are pets, of course, but by their simple presence they provide a service that, in some cases, not even a human could provide. For many people, they make the difference between isolation and community.
