My kitten here recently started going on the carpet
my mother says we need to rehome him but thats another story..

Will the stray I'm taking in soon go on the carpet too because of that

If so how do I prevent this

If your mother is talking about rehoming a kitten, it would be irresponsible to take in another cat.

What kind of litter are you using? How often do you scoop it? How old is your kitten? How long have you had him?

Do you use a good enzyme cleaner when the kitten goes on the carpet?

You may need to take them to the vet.  It could be indicative of medical issues.  Again, it would be irresponsible to rehome him without getting to the root of the problem and then take on another cat.  Even if you don't rehome him, you need to have him cleared and checked up BEFORE getting another cat and the other cat needs to be checked, too, before you let them interact.

Like I said thats a completely unrelated different story so I'm not going into all the details but I've already got an appointment with a vet ... can we please not jump to conclusions....

I simply want to know if there is anything I can do to prevent my new cat from going on the carpet as well

I was not jumping to conclusions but just sharing the fact that any time you bring a new pet into the equation, there need to be health checks on current and new pets done.  That's all.  :)  Good luck!

If the kitten is going on the carpet there will be a reason.  One, as has already been mentioned, is that there may be a UTI, so I'm really please you're taking her to the vet.

It is incredibly important that you clean the area thoroughly where cats have weed.. even if you can't smell it, they and other cats can and they'll keep using that spot.

Here are a couple of articles that will help:

http://www.thecatsite.com/a/combat-cat-urine

And if you do get a new cat they will also wee there unless you do this.

Remember, too, that some cats just won't wee where they poo.  They may even have been quite happy about it for a while and then just refuse.  I have two cats and four litter boxes.

Let us know how you get on at the vet.
