As it's almost that time of year again I thought I would share some pics of pumpkins that we have carved over the last couple of years. Enjoy!

Wow! Those are amazing pumpkins!

Do people do much for Halloween over in the UK?

Thank you.
I live in a small village and on Halloween everyone that has children will be out collecting treats, we have a lovely community. We don't do trick or treating anymore as our children are grown up doing their own thing but we still have a big bowl of treats ready by the front door as the bell is constantly ringing from about 6-9pm.
That said, when I was a child I lived in the city and not much went on so I guess it varies depending on where you live here in the UK. I used to love getting the children dressed up in their costumes and painting their faces and of course carving the pumpkins. :D

Awesome pumpkin art!
I'm thinking you must have put in a pretty high number of hours practice to produce these.
Looking forward to seeing what you come up with this year now.

That's what I was thinking--how long does it take to carve something like that?!  They're fantastic.

Thanks! It can take anywhere between half hour for the fish bones one to a couple of hours for something like Jack Sparrow.
I don't know weather we are carving any this year for our home because we have been invited to friends and if we leave a pumpkin outside its like an invitation for the children to knock and that would probably drive the cats crazy if we're not home with them.
We get our patterns from here: http://www.carvingpumpkins.com/index.html
They have a great gallery to look through, some of the carvings are amazing.

Two HOURS?  It would take me two DAYS to do something like that!  Impressive.

Me too, and there's no way it would end up looking anything like what it should either.

that's after we had scooped the insides out.[/quote]
At least with pumpkins the insides aren't rock hard like the big yellow fleshed turnips we used to use in the UK before pumpkins got popular!   I have evil memories from my childhood of trying to scoop out turnip with a spoon and knife - and the spoon would inevitably be broken and in the bin by the end and everyones hands would be red raw (it was not a job to do alone, far too painful) !

Those pumpkins are amazing!

I live in an apartment so I don't bother carving pumpkins, but when I lived in a house we did. It was such fun.  Though we only did the basic triangle eyes, nose and jagged teeth style, nothing so elaborate as your ones.

I was watching Halloween wars last night (cupcake wars but the Halloween version, with pumpkins) and they were carving some amazing sculptures. I might have a go at that this year and take it to my friends house for Halloween.
If it's good enough I will post a picture......... actually if it's not good I will post a picture. Should give everyone a laugh.:D

mservant mservant turnips, seriously?!! :lol3:

kittywhiskers kittywhiskers You inspired me to get more creative this year. So I went online and found loads of awesome templates for pumpkin carving. I did three. They didn't all turn out great, but I'm so impressed by the dog one that I'm all keen for next year! It did take a while, about four hours, but I'll be quicker next time now I know what I'm doing.
Hope you don't mind me sharing my pictures in your thread?

Those pumpkins are fantastic!! Of course I don't mind you sharing your photos. :D
Alas, I didn't get round to carving anything, hubby brought me home a pumpkin on Wednesday but I have been so busy painting (my new project, folk art with cat's in) and really wanted to get it finished so just never got round to carving it. It's still sitting on my kitchen table.
