the male cat is huge and strong
and, really, really sweet and loving

He's about 6 years old now.

He's sweet to kittens, too...

however, when they become adults,
he beats the snot out of them.

he is going to be neutered next week
and I'm hoping that his behaviour
will become less aggressive towards
adult cats

Does anyone have any experience with
this?

Hi kstavert,

Good job getting your male cat neutered.

It will definitely make him less aggressive, but it may take a few weeks before you notice any difference in his behaviour as he'll still have all those male hormones in his system. He'll still be able to get female cats pregnant for a few weeks after his neuter, so if you have any unfixed female cats make sure you keep them separate until the girls have been spayed too.

It's never too late to change. My oldest cat was a stray and was about 10 years old when I got him fixed. He went from being a huge, battle-scarred street fighting cat to the most lovable old teddy bear within about a month. Doesn't spray anymore either, which is great.

keep us posted on how it goes with your kitties.

Norachan, thank you

thanks also for telling me that he could

still impregnate my other females...that

was a shocker....

5 more girls are going in two weeks...

Sebastian (big male - now neutered)

took off almost immediately after

waking... I've not seen him now for

more than a day ;(

I'm hoping that behaviour changes,

too.  In the past, he'd disappear for

up to a month... come home for an

hour or two... eat a wee bit, beat up

his sisters and go away.

I will let you know if he comes back

a changed man :)

Hi Karen,

It's quite usual for cats to take off for a day or two after a trip to the vet. Male cats get over being neutered so quickly, they barely notice that anything has been done to them. I think the most traumatic thing about the whole experience must be the ride to the vet's and then back home again.

Girl cats take a little longer to recover from being spayed. Do they come in your house or are they strictly outdoor cats? If you let them in it would be a good idea to keep them indoors for a day or two while they recover from being spayed. If they are outdoor only cats and you don't have a barn or a shed you can keep them in ask the vet if they'll keep them in overnight.

When I was trapping a feral colony in my neighbourhood my vet would give them all an antibiotic shot to make sure they healed properly and keep female feral cats in overnight for free. You can keep them in a carrier or cage overnight in a pinch, but you'll need to line it with some puppy pads to soak up any "accidents".

I hope your boy comes home again soon.

We have a pet door for the dogs, so the

cats also come and go....

I do grab up all of the babies and lock them

in the bathroom at night

Sebastian (big, older male) was used to

taking off for very long periods of time..

He's actually been staying around the house

his two sisters (the ones he beat on all of

the time) have not forgotten and they hiss

and cry when he comes near....

I've managed to get one of the girls to lie

beside him and I pet and comfort her

through her fear... and he just lies peacefully

beside her....Sissy eventually stops yowling

and hissing

so, the neutering worked in terms of removing

his aggressive behaviour...

I'm really hoping that his sisters will eventually

let go of their expectation that he will fight

them.

The rest of my little girls go in next week....
