Prednisone and increased hunger?

Has anyone experienced this when putting their cat on prednisone? I started her on it not quite a month ago. Her appetite kind of comes and goes at times. I have noticed since I got a new order of food delivered about a week and a half ago, her appetite has increased a lot. She can't seem to get enough. This is good because she needs to start gaining and stop losing weight, but it is normal? Could something be different about the food? If it is the prednisone, why did it not start right away? I have to take her for a check-up and weigh-in in two days, so I will ask the vet then. I'm just curious what everyone thinks.

By the way, she does not really look like she has gained any weight with all the eating, and she definitely does not have parasites.

The look and texture of the Wellness sliced salmon canned food did seem a little different on this order. The sliced were wider, not as long and skinny, and the food was a little more congealed, not as runny or with as much gravy. The ingredients have not changed though.

I don't know about the "comes and goes" part, but prednisone is well known to increase appetite.

By the way, do you have prednisone or prednisolone? Prednisolone is the preferred drug form for cats.

It seems to work for her so far. She has not vomited her food or had hairballs since being on it. Of course, it has not even been a full month yet. I have never heard of the other drug that you mentioned. Why is it better for cats?

Prednisolone is a slight variation of prednisone. Prednisone needs to be converted to prednisolone, but cats don't do the conversion very well, so prednisolone is more effective. Prednisolone is also easier on the liver, I believe.

I know there were shortages last year of prednisolone, I'm not sure if they resolved, and if prednisone was hit as hard.

Since this seems to be your first time using prednisone, I thought I'd let you know that should you decide to take your kitty off, DO NOT QUIT COLD TURKEY. Kitties need to be weaned off. If the cat has been on it for a while it can take a long time. Typically dosages are cut in half for awhile, then halved again, or the amount of time between doses will be increased until it's next to nothing. Going off cold turkey can induce Addison's disease.

I don't think the vet will ever take her off the prednisone as long as it keeps working. She does want to eventually reduce the amount to one pill every other other day. I am currently giving it once a day. It will depend on whether or not she has lost any more weight on her next visit in two days. She does not want to decrease it until she is able to maintain her weight.

Every other day is good. When you give it every other day it keeps the production of certain hormones going and buffers the Addisons's disease issue should she ever need to go off.
