One of my cats was diagnosed with IBD not quite a month ago (have a thread about it in the health forum). She has done well and has had no vomiting since I started her on prednisone. A food change could have also helped. I am CURRENTLY feeding her a combination of Blue Basics Duck and Potato dry food and Wellness sliced salmon wet food. The vet has told me to keep feeding her only these foods and nothing else for now. They both have no corn, wheat, soy, etc,-- the usual allergens. I have been told to steer clear of chicken and turkey for now, as well. She WAS eating Wellness Core turkey and duck dry food, Blue Basics Turkey and Potato dry, and a combination of Wellness sliced salmon and sliced turkey before.
Even though my cat is doing well, I am a little concerned because I have heard that dry food and fish are bad for IBD cats. I only started adding canned to my cat's diet regularly a few months ago, on the advice of the vet, to hopefully help her maintain her weight. She has never really cared much for canned, and the Wellness sliced salmon is the only canned food out of a gazillion I have offered that she does not simply sniff or lick and walk away from. The food also contains carageenan, but it is about the twentieth ingredient on the list. There are some "perfect" foods out there (like Natures's Variety canned duck) that do not contain ANY of the ingredients that she should not have (including carageenan), but she has rejected them. She is extremely
picky. She also hates pâté.
She seems to alternate now between only wanting dry for a few days, and then only eating canned for a couple of days. The vet says that she needs to have some dry for her teeth, and that the foods I am feeding her are high quality.
I guess my question is, should I try more aggressively to find other foods for her, or just leave things alone since she is doing well?
