Hi guys I'm new here and I'm a little concerned. My 11 month old kitten/cat has been breathing loudly recently. It sounds like he is snoring but he's doing it while he is awake as well as sleeping. Have booked a vets appointment for tomorrow (as after explaining what was wrong vets said it was emergency appointments only on a Sunday) but he's just taken himself off and curled up in a blanket (very unusual for him).

Should I be calling the vet back and saying we need to come in today or am I just being overly paranoid??

Thanks for any help!

Can you measure how many breath per minute he is taking while he is asleep or very restful?  It should be 30 per minute or less, but he must truly be at rest for this to be accurate.  Time the breaths for 10 seconds ans then multiply that number by 6. Over 40/min and he could have a serious medical problem.  But if its just noisy breathing then it doesn't sound like an emergency.

And is the noise more in his nose or in his throat?

He doesn't seem to be breathing any quicker than normal, it sounds like his throat....it's not all the time so it's difficult to actually hear it properly sometimes. He settles down and it starts, when he moves it stops it's very odd...

Ok then it doesn't sound urgent. It could be nothing except a bit odd or something fairly minor. A vet will help you.

If your kitty starts to breath more from the abdominal area(further down) than the lung area I would be worried as well as if it begins to open mouth breathe. Then emerg stat.

Hi all, so just got back from the vets. Have been given a weeks antibiotics for our little guy. They think it's a chest infection so hopefully the antibiotics will clear that up, if there's still a problem in a week we have to have some chest X-rays done in case it's asthma. Let's hope the antibiotics work! Thanks for your replies yesterday, helped calm me a lot! X
