I have a two year old female who makes it impossible for me to apply “Fontline Plus”. She doesn’t like to be held, picked up or even touched much for that matter. Every attempt I have made so far to apply “Frontline” to her has been a disaster. As soon as she sees the green blister applicator she is off like a rocket. If I do manage to grab her, it has been impossible for me to both hold her still, spread the fur so that I can get down to her skin and apply the treatment.

She fought me so hard when I tried to apply it last night that I feared for a few seconds that she had broken her neck. Not only is she missing out on needed treatment when this happens, it also leaves me with a wasted blister applicator. Anyone who has purchased “Frontline” know that these applicator blisters are not cheap.

The problem to me seems to be that it takes four hands to successfully apply the treatment, two to hold her, a 3rd one to spread the fur and a 4th one to apply the liquid. Unfortunately I only have two. I live by myself and my neighbors are rarely home so I have to make do with just two hands. I had no problem at all doing this with my previous cat. She was a real lap cat and as docile as, well….a kitten. Giving her medicine and/or “Frontline” was a snap with her. This little one is just the opposite however.

I have read through the threads (both on here and elsewhere) on how to get cats to take medicine (either liquid or pills) orally but they haven’t been any help to me. Right now, the only solution I can see is to take her to the vet and have him apply it. I don’t relish doing that however since vet bills every time she needs “Frontline” would be extremely and in my opinion, unnecessarily costly.

Has anyone here dealt with this problem successfully and/or have any suggestions for me on how to handle this? Thanks.

I have a two year old female who makes it impossible for me to apply “Fontline Plus”. She doesn’t like to be held, picked up or even touched much for that matter. Every attempt I have made so far to apply “Frontline” to her has been a disaster. As soon as she sees the green blister applicator she is off like a rocket. If I do manage to grab her, it has been impossible for me to both hold her still, spread the fur so that I can get down to her skin and apply the treatment.

She fought me so hard when I tried to apply it last night that I feared for a few seconds that she had broken her neck. Not only is she missing out on needed treatment when this happens, it also leaves me with a wasted blister applicator. Anyone who has purchased “Frontline” know that these applicator blisters are not cheap.

The problem to me seems to be that it takes four hands to successfully apply the treatment, two to hold her, a 3rd one to spread the fur and a 4th one to apply the liquid. Unfortunately I only have two. I live by myself and my neighbors are rarely home so I have to make do with just two hands. I had no problem at all doing this with my previous cat. She was a real lap cat and as docile as, well….a kitten. Giving her medicine and/or “Frontline” was a snap with her. This little one is just the opposite however.

I have read through the threads (both on here and elsewhere) on how to get cats to take medicine (either liquid or pills) orally but they haven’t been any help to me. Right now, the only solution I can see is to take her to the vet and have him apply it. I don’t relish doing that however since vet bills every time she needs “Frontline” would be extremely and in my opinion, unnecessarily costly.

Has anyone here dealt with this problem successfully and/or have any suggestions for me on how to handle this? Thanks.

Thanks for the response. This is not an oral medicine so pill administering techniques don't apply. I am trying to apply "Frontline Plus" which has to be applied directly onto the skin on the back of her neck (so that she can't lick it off). It can't be applied to the fur or it won't spread around her skin properly. It is spread by means of the oils on the cat's skins which is why the fur has to be peeled back so that the liquid gets directly on the skin.

This was a problem I had as well for treating my resident ferals.

I finally outsmarted them and put their food in an open cage where they have to go in to eat.

Each time I needed to flea treat, I would simply close the cage trapping them in it.

One I could pet, the other I couldn't.

So I would always put the flea meds into a 1m; syringe for shooting action.

Use whatever you can to ruffle up the fur where you need to, even using a wand toy.

Then I would shoot the med under the fluffed fur while distracting them with my other hand, and voila, done deal :)

I have a very sweet, docile kitty who becomes feral any time she thinks she's being flea'd. I use an E-collar which makes her more docile, and keeps her from licking it off at the same time.

Oksana is usually so disoriented by the e-collar she has no idea I've applied it until it's too late.

Another thing you could try is rolling her up in a blanket like a burrito. That was she can't struggle and hurt herself or you.


With regards to the comment about pill pockets, I think she was implying that you should try Capstar. It's a pill that kills all the fleas on a cat. However, if she is indoor/outdoor topical is a better option.

The reason I asked about pills is for the same reason that @bonepicker posted. Capstar is a pill given daily that controls fleas very quickly and Program is a monthly pill that prevents flea reproduction.

About to frontline my aggressive cat right now. Past two times clawed me to death. And that's with two people. Gotta go back to my old trick. I've found getting them in the bathroom helps. With the door closed not hard to catch. Then I use a stretch poly fleece top. I pop the bottom over her and show her the way out is through the sleeve. But if you have the right size top they get stuck. The right size lets their head stick out but traps the rest them. If necessary sew it a little tighter. Or get a bigger top. How did I think of this? I wondered how the vet took X-rays of angry animals without dying. Holding my cat by the scruff is a no no. She goes absolutely nuts. Must have been held there roughly by a human as a kitten? So the vet has this bag they out them in that un-zips here and there so legs can stick out for X-ray. It also allows them to hold the cat still without getting scratched. I wish they sold them online. Good luck. I also can't get her to take a pill.

Please post a picture of the fleece you speak of.  I am about to take my cat to the vet for flea treatment as I don't own enough leather to protect myself from his bites and scratches.  Yes, he bites too.  He's and awful cat.  I can barely pet him, only when he's hungry and now only his head I think because the fleas are driving him (and me) nuts!  Thank you for your post, I found it helpful.  Glad to know I'm not the only one with a crazy cat!

You can give your cat a $20 monthly Comfortis flea pill. Our vet sold it to us even though never saw cat. Crush it and mix into wet food.
Yes cat will be extra grumpy when itchy. You need to treat house also if cat has fleas.
Cat must go in carrier to vet. Put food in crate to trick cat to go inside.

The bathroom works really great IF you can coax them into the bathroom and shut the door quickly enough.

My Toby is far too smart.

I have been trying to catch him to give him flea medicine for 4 weeks and finally caught him tonight.

Put some catnip in the bathroom and one of my other cats went in there and he was curious, but didn't go into the bathroom far enough for me to close the door.

But finally he did and I slammed the door.

He calms right down in the bathroom and lets me put the medicine on him.

I have a similar problem but mine is 1 cat easy, 1 cat tricky and 1 cat impossible. Luckily my local rescue group does weekend shot clinics and they also have a $10 flea treatment. So the impossible one gets boxed up and taken to the clinic for flea treatment. She's not happy but at least I am not scratched up.

I have 3 cats.  Two of them aren't too bad, but Toby is impossible.

IF I could get him in a crate, then I can put flea medicine on him !!!!

We missed last year's annual shots because I couldn't catch him.

But once I get him in the bathroom, which is a huge under taking, he is like a lamb in the bathroom with the door closed !!!

Due for rabies shots next year and I have no idea how I will get him in a crate !!!!

I feel for you - and anyone else that is having problems with this! A lot of my cats (12 - all rescues) are just lovey-dovey until it's time for the flea treatment!  Then all of a sudden they turn into Sherlock Holmes somehow, figure out that my petting them seems to be on the back of the neck and then the flash of green and they think I've turned into the cat devil and am trying to bring harm to them!  I just got in the monthly dose - 12 of them - and so far this afternoon I've managed to get 3, yes 3 - a quarter of them only, applied. Then those 3 have told the others to stay away from me and not to trust me so now I'm in a pickle! You would think that over the course of many years, someone could come up with an applicator that could part the hair and squeeze the medicine out in about 5 seconds but I sure can't find it!  If someone did come up with something that worked, they'd probably be a millionaire in no time!

I adopted a pure white, small and tactile yet nervous cat a few days ago.  I am having the same issue.  He spots a tube and runs for the hills!  He is very jumpy but otherwise settled (he's just a bit timid).  I am going to try to disable him by quickly massaging then gently grabbing his scruff which disables them.  My partner can then administer the potion whilst I do the rest but choosing the exact right time is crucial.  Never had this issue with past cats but Star is very savvy.  I can only imagine he has been roughly treated before with a no-nonsense approach!!  Sadly he's due his flea and worming liquid so no-nonsense it is.  Honestly, we are all being owned by small animals hahaha!   He's definitely not daft and nor are most cats.  Goodness knows how I am ever going to get him in the cat carrier - maybe I need to entice him in often with treats so he can come and go at will to get him accustomed to it!

My method of keeping all the kitties contained so I can quickly flea treat them all, is to do the usual feeding time routine by calling "KITTIES!" (if your kitties go outside, have a bit of a head count first) and shaking the box of dry food, or a bag of cat treats. Once they all come running into the dining room, I scatter a few treats and then shut the door. There is no way out and nowhere for the cats to hide, the only things in the dining room are the cat tree, dining room table and dryer, as well as the basic cat accessories, due to the way it is a fairly large room cut off from the rest of the house, and uncarpeted, it is Kitty Jail for when I have to keep them contained (like currently now, taking a break from painting the hallway, they are meowing so pitifully at the door). The only other door in the dining room leads to our small kitchen.

I take one cat at a time into the kitchen, shut the door, sit them on the counter and flea treat them, and then release them back into the dining room. The last few do require a bit of catching, but there is nowhere for them to escape to. I do the same with worming, other that they come in voluntarily because I give them a small amount of tuna with a hidden pill in it.

My cats aren't that bad with putting the flea treatment on, usually I just have the cat on a surface, facing away from me, arm around them, curled up so my hand is on the back of their neck, rub their neck with my thumb until you see skin, then use the other hand for the spot on.

If they don't go for this, the towel burrito method worked for me for other cat things. Get a towel, sneak up on cat, wrap them in it so their paws are against their body, hold in appropriate position being careful not to squash cat, give medicine, then release.

I have the exact same problems with all five of my cats, and I even have one who doesn't trust me and hates me after the application.  She now runs from me when I try to pick her up.  I wish I had a solution, but I don't.  Sorry.
