Having a very hard time giving my cat Zeniquin pill. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I've already tried putting it in the back of her mouth, worked the first time but she's not falling for that again.

Tried a pill pocket with no interest.   Can I crush it into water and give in a syringe ?

Thanks everyone

I just went through this last week. I'm no expert, but this website below has lots of suggestions. I used to just shove it in his mouth & then put a water bottle cap-full of water down his mouth so he'd swallow. But that's not the least stressful way. I found that breaking off chunks of the pill pockets & forming it around the pill was better. Those pill pockets are huge! He ate it better that way then whole. Surprisingly, he actually ate the pill when I hid it in his wet food. The website has lots of other suggestions & stresses the importance of making them drink or eat right after so the pill isn't stuck in their esophagus. Good luck!

You can crush up the pill and take just a pce of a pill pocket.Just big enough to fold over and form a very small ball. Then pill it.Usually I always give a 3 ml water chaser afterwards.Cats have a very long esophagus so adding water helps the pill or pce of pill pocket get down there.Otherwise it is called dry pilling. Not rec'd.If you cannot syringe water after as you have to do it very slowly on the side of the mouth not directing it to the back of the mouth then give some sort of treat or meat you know you're kitty will eat right away.that will help it move down as well.HTH  Hugs to baby

Thank you both for your replies. She didnt want any part of the pill pocker so I cut the pill in half and hid the pieces in a small amount of Fancy Feast wet food shes never turned down. She licked the plate clean. The vet also suggested I add a tablespoon of water to her wet food from now on. Im surprised I never thought of that myself.

I'm glad I found this site. Nice, suppprtive friendly people.

If your kitty like cheddar cheese, cut a thick slice and break the pill into small pieces.  Cram the pill into a small square of the cheese (break off a piece of the cheese) and then give to the kitty.  Mine never chew the cheese, it seems, so down the hatch goes the pill!

I use pieces of pill pocket to 'cement' the pill pieces to a piece of bacon, lunch meat, anything they really like and they usually eat it right up. Make sure the pill side is down or they may smell it,  I haven't had a cat turn down bacon yet!

We only offer a very small piece of cheese after pilling.  The whole piece might be 1/4" -1/2" square, if that.  We had to give her Zenequin for 60 days and we never had a problem doing this.

I used this medication for a previous cat - i can't remember if it tastes bitter to them or not.  I used to order gel capsules from thriving pets.com - the gel caps come in various sizes but if you tell them what medication you are using they can suggest the smallest size gel cap that will fit the medication.  I would coat the gel capsule in some butter and put that in a dish in the freezer for about 5-10 minutes to firm up the butter and then I'd pill as usual.  with pill pockets you have to be very careful to NOT touch any of the pill pocket with the hand or fingers that touched the actual pill.  I would tear off some of the pill pocket and flatten it and carefully pick up the pill with the other hand, set it in the middle and then pinch the pill pocket around the pill.  If they smell the residue from the pill on the pill pocket they won't touch it.  I would sometimes put the pill in the pill pocket and then take some roaster chicken and make a chicken meatball and sometimes she'd take it that way as well.

I wouldn't put a water bottle cap of water in their mouth - there are syringes you can get at your vets office for that and if you do choose that option, you do it from the side of their mouth - you never want to risk them choking or aspirating the water down the wrong pipe, that can be deadly.
