Ruptured lipoma

My cat who is 17 years old has had a small bump on the back of his neck that has slowly grown over the past 2 years.

The vet examined it last checkup and said it appeared to be lipoma though no actual biopsy was done.

It has never bothered him nor given any other signs of concern. It has reached the size of a dime.

Tonight I realized it had ruptured, whatever came out has dried up and I don't know what to clean it with.

I will have to call for an appointment tomorrow and probably take him the following day, but not sure what to use to keep it clean in the meantime.

I don't believe this is life threatening nor does it seem to concern him but I am worried since it has opened it can get infection.

Any suggestions on a topical cleanser I might have on hand or can buy at a pharmacy that will be effective but not painful (no burning)??

The only thing I have that is for pets and might work is ear wash fluid and I have some antibiotic drops and ointments that were for other pets either eyes or ears and I was thinking maybe to apply in the meantime.

I mean I do have triple antibiotic ointment and other people-stuff but afraid to use peroxide cause I know that will sting.

All ideas welcome!

Thanks, Kiwi

First of all welcome to TCS!

I would say that just some warm water and antiseptic soap would probably be okay if you need to use anything at all.  Since you are going right into the vet I wouldn't worry about the peroxide or antibiotic ointment right now.

This is the second time in two days when I've seen the suggestion of using hydrogen peroxide on "wounds".

Folks, never, ever, should H202 be used on any open (broken skin) wound.......on any animal (that includes the human variety) !
Use an antiseptic solution or plain water and gauze or a cloth (not cotton) to gently clean around the wound, and a syringe or similar device to flush the solution over the surface of the wound. Antiseptic solutions are made by diluting concentrated solutions bought at the store that contain either povidone iodine or chlorhexidine diacetate as the active ingredient. Do not use alcohol or hydrogen peroxide on the wounds, as these will actually damage the tissue. Povidone should be diluted to the color of weak tea; chlorhexidine should be diluted to pale blue.

- on that tissue damage:
You might think all that bubbling of hydrogen peroxide on your wound is its germ-killing action hard at work. And you'd be right. But that bubbling isn't just killing the bacteria in your cut, it's also killing your body's “fibroblasts,” the cells responsible for repairing the wound.1

It gets worse: Multiple randomized, controlled trials — the best kind of research — show that hydrogen peroxide does not prevent or treat infections in wounds.

So not only will hydrogen peroxide damage your cells, but it's completely useless to begin with!

The use of hydrogen peroxide is old, old medicine......

Thanks, I was not going to use peroxide (I think I said that in my post) and was just trying to get something I could get asap.

I was able to get him to the vet faster than I thought so I left it alone.

He will need to have the growth removed, just waiting to get current bloodwork back and make sure he is ok to proceed.

Hopefully it will be a quick and easy removal and we'll be done with that!
