Hi guys.

I am freaking out about an ear mite solution that my vet gave my 6 month old, 7lbs persian cat. She prescribed Bio-Groom Ear Mite treatment, which has a concentration of 0.15% pyrethrins. I've used it every other day for the past week on my cat, and I've noticed that as soon as I put it into his ears, he becomes irritable and lethargic for the rest of the day and his ears get red. On the bright side, the medication seems to be working, he has way less gunk in his ears and seems to want to scratch less.

Today I used it again, and he is unusually depressed...he has been eating and drinking water, but seems to want to sleep more than anything. Do you guys know anything about the safety of these products? I am at my wit's end with his earmites, and I figured the vet would know what to give him. But it is clearly giving him discomfort and I don't think I want to continue with the treatment. Any ideas would be helpful!

I would contact your vet immediately and discuss alternative treatments, of which there are several.

Also a chemical called PERMETHRYN is contained in some flea products. This is also in some fly and insect sprays, I would not want it anywhere near my cat!

Ugh, I'm NOT putting this into his ears again. He is ok today, more than 30 hours later. I'm guessing he is fine? He's eating and awake and all of that. Can the poisoning happen the next day if he hasn't been in contact with the chemical since? We're seeing our vet tomorrow. Seriously, this ear mite thing has been going on for too long, and I'm sick of it.

To follow up, we've been given Oridermyl, which also seems to have pyrethins, but in a much smaller dose, plus an anti-fungal property. He used it before, and now no more horrors of BioGroom. His ears have become much less red...so the stuff seems to be working, and the kitty is not going uber depressed from it.
