Hi everyone..

Just wanted to get advises from ya'll. If a cat is loosing weight when everything else is normal (he is eating regularly, he is not vomitting, and he has regular poop,) is there something wrong??? I have notice my baby loosing weight for some reason. The only thing I have notice is him drinking water every now and then.. But he still eats and finish his food. Im planning to have him check by a vet but I wanted to observe him first. Im soo worried.. :'(

How old is he?  It could be anything from worms to thyroid problems or diabetes.  I'd not wait to observe him, but get him to the vet for a full blood work up to rule out anything serious.

I agree ! The earlier any medical problems are found, the easier and less expensive they are to sort out. ;)

i would take your kitty to the vet ASAP and have blood work done.  it's possible that your kitty is developing diabetes or chronic kidney disease. when you get the blood work results, ask specifically about your kitties kidney function and if the kitty has diabetes.

i have a 17 year old male,  petey, with chronic kidney disease.  he had blood work done in december of 2013 because he lost quite a bit  of weight, and back then,  the vet said his blood work was fine. then, in august, 2014, 8 months later, i took him back to a different vet in the same practice, for more blood work - he had dramatic weight loss - and this next vet told me his kidney function is poor, and his current level is worse than he had back in december.   i then asked about his december levels, and his kidney function was low back then.   i had no idea he had the problem since december!!

my point is, take your kitty to the vet for blood work and when the results come back, ask specifically about kidney function and diabetes.  IF your kitty has diminished kidney function,  I would start your kitty on a high-quality protein diet or kidney diet now,  to help preserve whatever kidney function he/she has now - even if your kitty has a great appetite now.

i wish i had asked more questions back in december so i could have gotten my boy on a kidney diet back then.

He is 3 years old. I tried deworming him already. There is actually a big worm about 4-5 inch that came out from him last 2 weeks ago. I believe that could be one reason. But the worm came out already right? So why is he still not gaining weight? :( Can I deworm him again to make sure all worms will come out?

What are the symptoms of the disease you mentioned? Thyroid and Diabetes?

What did you use to deworm the cat? An over the counter product from the pet store? Sometimes these products don't work very well. And some may only be effective for certain types of worms. There may still be immature worms inside your cat that haven't been killed yet. It takes at least a couple of days to fully break a worm's lifecycle (eggs, larvae, adults). I also suggest a trip to the vet for treatment of the worms and weight loss.

Diabetes tends to occur in cats about 8 years old and older. Juvenile diabetes can happen in younger cats but it's pretty rare. Symptoms can include weight loss, huge appetite, drinking excessive amounts of water, flooding the litter box with large amounts of sticky sugary smelling urine, nail polish remover smell on the breath.

Dental problems can cause a cat to not eat as much so there may be some weight loss.

I'd get him to the vet for a proper deworming.  With the life cycle of parasites, it's possible that he's still got some in his system.

Yes, Im afraid I did it myself to deworm him and just bought the product to a pet store. So it is safe to deworm a cat again?

Thanks for all the info.

Obviously, the OTC worm product didn't do the job. Most don't. Best if you take your cat to the vet to get something that will do the job properly - and get your cat checked out at the same time.

The deworming products you can buy in pet shops are not strong enough to kill all worms, and are just a waste of money. You need the prescription only dewormer's which are stronger and are avaliable at a vets. ;)

So we visited the vet last Monday, My Ngeew was stressed out and crying on the way to the vet. I guess because he is not used in going out and just hearing all the cars running.

Vet said his eyes normal, teeth normal, nose normal.

He only gave dose of deworming and advise to monitor him and bring him back after 2 weeks. I hope all is well and my baby will regain his weight. He still finishes his food as usual .
