Hi:

About three weeks ago, my vet put my cat on a Probiotic that is added to her food once a day for 30 days. He also recommended that I change her daily wet food from Purina Friskies to Purina One. After making these changes, I have noticed that she is now meowing at me letting me know that she is hungry. It seems like the new food is not filling her up enough. In addition, her coat has very recently changed from its original healthy appearance to a new appearance that is now sort of spikey or greasy. This seems like some sort of nutritional imbalence to me. Has anyone experienced the same thing or something similar?? I am planning to visit my cat's vet very soon (next day or two) to discuss all of this. My cat is 15 months old and she is a 10.8 pound Calico and Tabby mix. Outside of this, my cat seems perfectly healthy as her sleep habits have not changed and her energy level / love to play with toys is still the same as it always has been. Thanks!!

Why is she on a probiotic and why did he recommend the food change?

As for food, you might try her on a wet food diet if you want to change her diet.  It'll be healthier for her in the long run.

Hi:

The food change was recommended because the doctor felt Purina One has better quality ingredients. Her main food has been wet food from the start...with a little dry food as well. She was given the Probiotic because small amounts of Campylobacter were found in her stool. The doctor wanted to go the Probiotic route to try and get rid of this bacteria. Thanks!!

If you've noticed a change in her coat and it's not for the better, I'd switch her back to what you were feeding her.  See if that works.

Hi: Thanks for that suggestion. I spoke with my vet today and we discussed the ingredients in Purina One. I have been giving my cat more fishy foods and one of the first ingredients in the wet food is Omega 6 Fatty Acids. Seems like I need to give her a better blend of different wet foods since those fatty acids could be making her coat more greasy.

If you're considering a food change, look into grain-free alternatives such as Wellness or Innova EVO.  Avoid Blue Buffalo as there's been some issues with negative side effects for some cats.  Purina isn't really a high quality food, and the first ingredient in any food should be a protein such as chicken or turkey.  You can also visit the Cat Nutrition forum for more information, especially if you'd like to try all a raw diet with your kitty.  http://www.thecatsite.com/f/64/cat-nutrition

Thanks again for those thoughts. Very helpful insights. I will check the nutrition area of the forum.
