Is it normal for cats/kittens to meow when they go in the litter box? I heard it is to let others know that they are using it... but then I've also heard that it could be a bad sign.. So I'm confused

I have some cats they will also meow when going to the bathroom and some cats are very quiet . So it may be normal for this cat to meow . If your cat is eating and drinking normal and the stool is normal and has no other problems you may see , then it is a normal thing for your cat to meow while using the litter box .

If this is a new behavior, then I would be concerned. Or, if the meow sounds like he is in pain or distress, I would be concerned. Otherwise, it may simply be habit.

My Loki meows when using the litter box and has done so for years. He is also very vocal persay.

However, when I first got him I packed him up and brought him to the Vet just to make sure he did not have a Urinary Track Infection/ blockage which can be fatal for males.

It would depend on what is happening in the litterbox while he is meowing. If there is no waste going out, if he is visibly straining, if he is making frequent trips and urinating very little, I would pack him off to the vet, or if he is missing the litter pan all together.

Thanks everyone. I was just worried that meowing could be a sole symptom for something like a urinary tract infection.. but her stool and urine habits seem to be fine. I'm just really new to this and really paranoid lol. They will be going to the vet for shots & visit soon. Thanks again

Hey nothing wrong with being paranoid! I am paranoid too lol.

Zoey sometimes announces AFTER she has gone to the bathroom. She will get out of the box and stand in the kitchen and make this yeowl like "PPPRRRREEEOOWWOWWWOOWWW!!"

How old is your cat? I hand raised mine so I had the task of making her go potty too, and she was very vocal with that when she went (which I was told is normal) and she used to meow while going to the bathroom when she was first litterd trained. I think it stopped by the time she was 8 weeks or so, but maybe in some cats it continues.

good luck.

I have cats. I rescue cats. I adore them. Heck I adore Dogs to Lizards. Anyway, animal behaviour seems to be a second instinct I had always.

If the cat cries , really cries , or lets another sound out that sounds like pain. Take the furrball to the vet.

IF the cat is talking , simply to be talking, a regular meow ,and no distress in voice, s/he Is probably just a talker about everything. "Cat politics "

HOWEVER, to error ,is better than to fail. I would take the cat in , to be sure there is not a UTI, or kidney ailment. Cats handle pain much different than dogs.

Cats can have serious pain, and not say a word , too.

My suggestion? A cat doc /vet, as soon as possible.

also, stay consistent on cat litter. I prefer the rolled pellets. Less dust to get into or cause kidney infections. keep me up to date on the kitty, please :)
