I'm able to pet the stray I've been trying to get used to me to eventually make a inside cat

After I pet him today I realized how much he loves being petted and that he became even more relaxed

Where do I go from here any advice?

I'm going through the same thing except they don't like getting held. Except for one she loves it, just keep trying getting their trust.

How many strays are there?

One thing you want to do is get him to the vet.  He may need to be neutered (or spayed) and after living outside, he will definitely need his shots and probably worming.

If that means trapping, so be it.  It will not hurt him and will enable you to speed up the process a little.  He will need a room where he can be alone and can't hide under furniture.  (A bathroom is fine).  He will need to be confined for at least a few days after the vet visit, depending on what needs to be done.  (For instance, if he gets shots but isn't neutered yet).  Keeping him in one room will help him acclimate to being inside (he may get upset because he is not used to it).  It will also make it easier to catch him if he has to go to the vet for a second visit.

It will also allow you to enter his territory (the room) where he can feel safe.  This will help him learn he can trust you.  Feed him at regular times and spend some time with him regularly.  (Scooping the litter box, sitting quietly, maybe reading to him.)

BTW - you might want to put some dirt or dried leaves on the regular litter - until he understands that is what litter is for.  He's used to using dirt; this will help him "get it."

Thank you for helping him!
