My 6 year old female seems to have more urine clumps in litter box than my 4 year old male. How many clumps per day is normal for cats their age? She eats no dry food and he only has a tiny amount of dry each day. They mostly eat all canned with water added. Also not to be too graphic, her urine clumps are round and his are different shapes. Is that normal?

A 10 pound cat produces about 6 fluid ounces or less of urine per day. This does vary among individual cats and various factors like age, gender, weight, and health affects urine output. A few clumps a day isn't unusual for one cat. My cats will pee maybe 3 times a day each and they both eat raw food.

Don't worry about the shape of the pee clumps
. It's normal for some clumps to be round and others odd shaped. It's from how the urine hits the litter as the cat pees.

Do worry if the you start seeing lots of huge pee clumps (like english muffin size) that are very sticky and/or smells like sugar. That is an indication of diabetes.

Maybe should get my boy checked. He did seem to have a stickey muffin sized one now and then.

The stickey part could actually have to do with the litter. As far as being as big as a muffin (lol), my Mia has rather large clumps as she likes to go over the top of where Norvy has last urinated. Strange little girl she is!  :)

But like LTS3 said if it smells like sugar it could indicate diabetes so it needs to see the vet.

You can definitely tell if a pee sclumps smells like sugar. It's like sugary soda smelling. And because of the sticky sugars in the urine, the clumps are pretty hard to scoop out even with clumping litter. Sometimes a cat will have what is called "cement booties" because they step in the pee and get sticky litter stuck to their feet which they then track all over the house.

4 years is too young for diabetes although juvenile diabetes can happen. You can test your cat's pee for the presence of sugar (glucose). You need KetoDiastix which is sold at any pharmacy. Get a fresh sample of pee and stick a test strip into it. Some people stick a test strip right under their cat as the cat pees, other use a clean litter box and a small layer of fish tank gravel and after the cat has pee, tip the box to collect the pee in a corner and stick a test strip into that.

My cats do that sometimes, too. One cat will pee right over an existing clump so when I scoop, it looks like one giant clump of pee. If you scoop daily, you should be able to tell who made which clump. My Aby makes pretty large clumps while my DMH makes litle clumps.

Its very easy for me to tell who makes which clump as I only have one box (My apt is tiny and able to see almost everything). My box is actually a giant storage box that I bought at Walmart and is clear with high sides. Works great! Lots of room for them to move. I scoop every a.m. and p.m.. I like the fact that none of my friends or my landlord has ever come in and been able to smell cat!  :)
