I have a kitty who stand and pees high; over the box.  She's done it forever and in fact I arrived at the "sterilite" storage container solution myself.

I'm so glad to see that others have these challenges and just wondering if other folks have "cleanup" rituals they wouldn't mind sharing.

I usually just empty the box entirely every once in awhile and hose it down.  But I was thinking if there were some sort of way to clean it as it sits then I wouldn't have to hose it down, just wipe it down every so often.

Anyone care to share?

hi and welcome to TCS!

my snick is a senior cat now and she sometimes will pee over the edge of the litter box. snick has some arthritis in her lower back, so i think it's uncomfortable for her to squat low. i started using a plastic storage bin lid under my snick's litter boxes too, and this makes clean up much easier for me. i wipe up the urine under the litter box/on the tray, then use a 50/50 mixture of white vinegar and water to spray on the tray and wipe that off. i do clean snick's litter boxes and trays a couple times each year by emptying them, spraying them inside and out with simple green and letting them soak for a bit. then i rinse out very well outdoors using a hose. i'm not sure that there's a way to get the litter box well cleaned by wiping it down every so often, but maybe someone else will have a better method or some ideas.

I'd like to add that this thread was moved from the end of another thread regarding cats who sit to pee, then gradually stand up during the process of doing their business.

Most folks identified that using a big Sterilite-style storage box as a litter box was the way to go.  Do folks that utilize that strategy have specific cleaning routines for the storage boxes that they use that are convenient?

Thanks much.

I have a cat who does that, though I don't use a sterilite container, just a high sided litter box. I just use a damp (with water)  paper towel to wipe down the sides when I scoop. A 50/50 vinegar and water solution works well when more odor control is needed - I use that when I clean the whole box, but you can probably use a little to wipe down the sides as well. The vinegar smell fades pretty quickly.
