How do you get a stray to use the litter box once you take it in

Many toms dont dig down their poo - they leave it out as a territory and dominance marking.  So it may be one reasonw why he doesnt hide his poo.  Thus, a neutering is a good step on the way.

Does he dont dig in at all, or doesnt he not recognize the litter for what it is for?

Anyways.   You can have some from the nature which he used before - may it be old leaves,  sand, or dirt (=earth).

Another option is to use a classical baked clay litter, no fancy parfumed variation - forbidden!

Above it you can sprinkle down some Cat Attract litter.  Dr Elseys is most renown, but there are others too.

Also, have him in a  small room - perhaps the bathroom?, till he has learned to make his needs in the litter, and dig down them.   Cats dont like to have their wastes around them, so willy nilly, he will dig them down.  Hopefully.

Proceed report and ask!

Good luck!

I've never had a problem with any cat using a litter box--even strays and ferals. They instinctively know to go in the box. I would recommend you use unscented litter, and mix a little garden dirt in with it at first. After a few days, you can use straight litter. You should confine him to one room for at least a few days with his litter box on one side and his food bowl and water bowl on the other. He will figure things out very quickly. Is he neutered? If not, you'll want to get this done sooner rather than later, since some intact male cats spray urine to mark territory, even inside.

I have had good luck with mixing garden soil and leaves in one box and Dr. Elsey's Litter Attract in another.  I had 2 boxes available as some cats don't like to pee/poop in the same box.  The cat I brought inside was using the box within the day once I used the Litter Attract and soil.  You can find the Litter Attract at most pet stores.  You can mix it with your current litter or you can use it straight.

My mom had a cat who would only use garden soil (which became difficult in the winter
).  I bought her some Litter Attract and he took right to it.  It is kind of pricey but, as ShadowsRescue mentioned, you can start mixing with with other litter.
