Hi everyone!! Found this site via google and Im need of your advice. A roommate just moved in with me and she brought her 2 cats and 1 dog along with her. They are supposed to stay in the backyard, but we are still conditioning it to avoid them escaping(making fences higher and the like).

In the mean time, she keeps them in her room locked when shes away and we let them roam around when we are and monitor them.

The problem is, that when she goes away, one of the cats become renegades. He starts climbing over the tv and sofas and he gets into my room, he wont get out of my bed unless my roommate comes and picks him and if you try to pick him up to move them down, he will cling to the bed with his claws and starts to hiss.

Enter Paranormal Cat-tivity.

The other night one of the cats got into my room(I used to leave the door open) and climbed on top of my cable box, ps3, etc and started to gaze at the backyard. Obviously he waked me up in surprised and he jumped down crashing everything in the table down.

Then another night, he climbed another table and turn it on the side and crashed some ceramics.

im really starting to hate that cat. My roommate tells me that that cat actually bullies the dog and the other cat(btw, she had the other cat's claws removed, so hes kinda more tame).

Need your advice in handliing this furry demon spawn before I start becoming really angry at the cat.

thanks

Honestly this sounds like more-or-less normal cat behavior. They will jump on things and knock things down, yes. Sometimes my cats walk by one of my end tables with their tail swishing slightly and just the tail will bring a few things down.  This is a normal part of living with cats.  While they can be trained not to jump on certain things, it sounds like you don't have the inclination to train them  so I think the best advice in your situation is for the roommate to keep them in her room until the backyard is finished, at least during the nighttime.

Good luck.

You need to get a cat scratcher the cheaper the better (as this is something only to be temporary ) , then get catnip spray and regular catnip. The spray is strong and the cat will love it. This way the cat will feel she has her own little safe place to be. Spray the catnip all over the scratcher and wait 3 minutes for it to dry. Put the regular catnip on it and place it next to your bed. She will smell the catnip and go it, or you can have your roommate put her on it. This is what I did for my cat when I wanted her to have her catnaps in my room not my moms. I use bliss mist and I also put it in her carrier when I need to take her to the vet or groomers, it helps her feel safe.

I hope this helps

Welcome to TCS!

I think you may need to keep your door closed for a while.  If you and/or the room mate can get a tall cat tree for the common area of your house (preferably somewhere with a view) it may deter him from exploring your bedroom.  I was able to get one from Armarkat for a reasonable price through ebay about 7 years ago I think.  It's still going strong!

Life with cats means rethinking where I have had knick knacks over the years.  Our household has changed in that we have 2 small children at home.  The cat tree is both cats preferred place to be during the kids waking hours.  We put the tree in front of a full length window and hung a bird feeder from the eve of the house in front of it.  Cat TV!  My kids and I enjoy the birds too.

Are you totally cat-proofing the backyard or building an enclosure?  I would be concerned about letting a declawed cat outdoors.
