In New Jersey, where I live, the only required vaccination is for rabies.  You can decide whether to get others.  So far, all of my cats (six inside and two outside) have had regular shots - rabies, distemper and in one instance, FELV.  One of the outside guys is due for his distemper shot and I am not sure whether to bother.

I've already decided not to vaccinate for FELV anymore.  The inside cats are strictly inside; the outside cats are in an enclosure they can't get out of and no other critters can get in to.

Now for the distemper shots.  I've read conflicting reports on whether they are necessary and that they can be harmful.

Opinions?  I'd rather not do any more shots than necessary but if you guys think distemper vacs are vital, I will definitely take him in.

Thanks!

Of course the FVCRP vaccine is vital---the question is, how often should it be given? The current AVMA/AAHA recommendations are "no more often than once every 3 years", after the kitten series and a one-year booster, even for outdoor cats. It's been proven to confer immunity for even longer than that, at least 5-7 years.

OK - thanks Willowy.  I was thinking that because they are not exposed to other critters (I am no longer fostering), It may be better to skip it.  I believe it has been less than a year since Alfred, the cat who is due, got his last one.  I haven't had him a year, yet.  So this must be the one year booster.
