I took my beautiful, 17 1/2 yr old, boy to the vet yesterday suspecting kidney failure and I was right.  The vet, as a last ditch idea decided to treat him for a kidney infection in the hopes that is what it is.  He said in 20% of these cases it can be kidney infection.

He gave him a lot of fluids and antibiotics and sent me home with antibiotics.

Does anyone know know how soon I would see improvement if it was an infection.  He was worse last night and there is no improvement today.  I hate seeing him in pain and suffering.

Most cat antibiotics begin to work in 48 hours, so he should start to feel better then. You have done all you can and now must wait and see. I'll pray for you both, I know it is a terrible burden to watch our loved ones suffer, good luck.

Thank you, I am sick over it.  I just lost my 13 year old Sept. 11. I truly feel like I am dying inside.  I am waiting on the vet to call me so I can update him.

Did the vet do tests to determine how much kidney damage there is? I'd ask the vet about learning to do sub-q fluids at home to help your cat flush out the toxins. While it is not a solution, it just might make the cat feel a bit better and buy you both a little time.

Yes they did blood work and he is stage III right on the border of stage 4.  They gave him fluids and I have some here, but he hates the needle and pills so much that I am not going to put him through it.  At this point it would be for me and not him, he is in pain, unhappy and can't eat or drink well.   The vet was giving me one last thing to try so I won't have any "if I had only" thoughts if I have to make that dreaded decision.

He is the same physically, he has eaten a tiny bit today and is drinking like crazy.  He isn't in as much pain, probably the fluids, but we put the cat heating pad down and that has really helped him relax.  At least I can see him peaceful rather than crying in pain.

My baby is gone, it wasn't an infection.  I feel like I am dying too.

Three of my babies gone in 11 months, two in less than three weeks.

I am so very sorry for your loss.  I have lost three kitties in the last year...I know the pain you must be feeling...we love them so...more than another human really..they love us unconditionally.

It might help to write him a letter and tell him how much you loved him..and how sad you feel..and whatever else you would like to say...I do that..and it helps put it all down on paper..

I have a crf kitty right now and it's so hard to wrap your head around the fact that what he has is terminal...might buy some time..but .....

Another thought...put your arms around yourself...and give yourself some love and hugs......you could even talk to your self like a dear friend.....it's comforting..

Hugs,

bev
