Today I received a phone call, a man with a heavy foreign accent. He said he had received information that my Windows computer was sending out viruses into the internet and he was calling to fix them. I knew immediately what kind of call it was. I asked who he was and who did he receive the notifications from. He wouldn't answer any of my questions, just kept saying he needed to fix my Windows computer. After several attempts to find out who he was, I told him no, I was not going to fix anything as I didn't have any problems. He hung up. My caller ID showed an unknown number.
I wonder how many people are duped into letting them remote access their computer or giving out credit card info. I wish there was a way to trace these call and stop what they are doing.
Anyone else received any calls like this.

I had a call a few months ago that I received a government grant for I think it was $9700, and I supposedly could do anything I wanted with it.  I called her out on it being a scam and made fun of her over the phone for being involved in such shady work.  No, I am not ashamed, I hate thieves with a passion.

I don't answer the phone if I don't know the number, and they usually don't leave messages. If they do, I don't call back unless I recognize what they're talking about.

My parents like to mess with scammers when they call. One of them got really mad at them and started swearing and screaming, while still claiming that whatever he was talking about was legitimate. Yeah, a legitimate boss would be really happy with a screaming employee ;).

We get them all the time; most of them have heavy accents and it's all you can do to even understand them. Last night, in fact, Rick answered the phone and the guy was trying his hardest to get Rick to believe him. Rick finally told the guy that he lives with a Windows computer tech who maintains all of our computers. The guy said he was very lucky and hung up. I posted about this several weeks ago, about the spoofing and the phishing going on with our phone. It's amazing that they're still doing it. But if they even get one person to actually believe them, I guess they can make some money from that person.

Several weeks ago, we got three phone calls in one day....that's what I posted about back then. The conversations went rather like this:

Phone rings....

Me: Hello?"

Phisher: Hello, this is so-and-so from Windows, calling about your computer.

Me: What's wrong with my computer?

Phisher: It's been infected with viruses.

Me: Really? That's terrible. But there's a problem.

Phisher: What's the problem?

Me: I don't have a computer!

Phisher: Oh, I'm sorry. I must have the wrong number.

Me: Dja think????

Hang up

Phone rings....

Me: Hello?

Phisher: Hello, this is so-and-so from Windows, calling about your computer.

Me: What's wrong with my computer?

Phisher: It's been infected with viruses and Windows called me to tell me to repair your computer. Are you aware that your computer is infected?

Me: Are you aware that I work for Microsoft?

Phisher: Oh! Well, then you have fixed your problem. Thank you.

Hang up.

The third time they called yesterday:

Phone rings....

Me: Good afternoon, this is Rahib from the Best Buy Geek Squad, specializing in the repair of virus-infected computers. And how may I help you this fine day?

WE get those c omputer virus calls all the same. I've told them I reported them to the FBI - but the best thing would just be to hang up. Told them to lose my phone number and never call here again -- but of course that never works. The caller id has all sorts of weird numbers --- one caller id number said the call was from Builders Square.

My landline provider offers anonymous call blocking for $1 a month. Cheap way to cut half of the scam calls, and the other half get cut by the Do Not Call List. If they manage to get through, I ask them for their name and home phone number and tell them I will call about 3 am and let them know, after I run them through NCIC.

A few friends or their relatives have gotten calls from people bawling and claiming to be their daughter. Then a "lawyer" breaks in and says that their daughter is in jail for possession of marijuana and needs $ for bail. If the victim says, "That doesn't sound like (daughter's name)," the "lawyer" says that she was in the car with someone else who had the marijuana. One person's mother-in-law wired $700 despite CVS's and Western Union's warnings that it was a scam.
