Hi all,

Any ideas what this could be? It looks worse at the moment because I put a Hydrocortizone cream on it. But it's pale to red in colour. He scratches it constantly but otherwise doesn't seem bothered by it. It's not sore because he lets me touch it without complaint and I've been treating it with anti-itch creams.

BTW....he does not have fleas nor ear mites. There are no sources of of a biting insect involved. It appears to be isolated to him as out other cat is fine. We're wondering if this may be some sort of infection but are not sure. If it doesn't clear, we will have him seen.

Thanks

Assuming its not ringworm, its likely infected at this point and probably needs antibiotic ointments.  The longer you wait for a vet visit, the harder and more expensive it may be to treat.  Save time and money and see a vet soon. :-)

We are planning on a vet visit if this doesn't resolve. It's not weeping and doesn't appear to be infected but better safe than sorry. Thank you for your response.

That is probably feline acne. Dab with hydrogen peroxide. Vet will give antibiotic shot or pills. Use only porcelin or glass feed bowls and wash and switch out after each feeding. Plastic bowls get bacteria and contribute to the problem.

Interesting. He does have a plastic type bowl in which I feed wet food. He usually has a little bit of that and prefers his kibble which is dispensed in a plastic container. I'll try the hydrogen peroxide and see if that helps.

Thanks again.

. It starts with blackheads that rupture, stridex pads work during the blackhead stage. I never noticed under my cats chin because he does not like being held. His scab fell off and I saw blood on the floor, that is how I found it, he also had on lip. Some like my cat need antibiotic to clear up and it usually returns over time. Ditching the plastic bowls and washing and rotating dishes so always clean helps a lot. Some people use paper plates and throw out each time, to cut down on dish washing.

yes, untreated feline acne causes my allergies in all likelihood. use ceramic or steel bowls. ban the plastic mats... I use cloth placements and wash them every few days. I'd clean her under chin with  hydrogen peroxide or warm soap and water. She hated it. But several times she would get a swollen lip and new cortisone and all her allergies eventually compromised her overall health.

Thanks again to all who replied. I'm now cleaning the spot with H2O2 and switching to ceramic bowls. As you can tell from the pictures, he's a Persian and even when he drinks water, his chin becomes wet. I think this somehow contributed to whatever this thing is. I shaved the site (earlier) and fear that maybe I shouldn't have done that but it gave me a better view of it and it was my hope that removing the hair around the site would help to expose it to air. I'll keep you all posted.

Thanks so much!

oh  the poor baby , I hope he feels better soon..

switching to ceramic bowls is good . just try to keep the area dry .

my female has had chin acne for awhile now .  i have always used stainless steel and ceramic dishes . i think her issue is due to allergies .

i have been washing her chin daily with peroxide and grapefruit seed extract and it has made a huge improvement . i am also adding lysine powder to her wet food daily ..

I think something drying like hydrogen peroxide works best. Let air get to it and dry it out. It is an oily condition so creams do not help much..

Yes, you're right! The creams wouldn't help. I've cleaned it twice now with the peroxide and will keep a close eye on it.
