I am in the process of battling a flea attack. I have just been introduced to a new oral product called COMFORTIS. It has been approved. It is in the form of a chew or treat. I have not ordered it yet but on the internet it appears to be large. It appears to be too large to pop into a kitty's mouth.

It is getting rave reviews on sites like allivet.com for $75.00 for 6 chews/pills.

Has anyone tried this product? What has your experience been with it?

Thanks for your help.

I have not used Comfortis but know of it. One out of four cats (about 28% of cats) may vomit shortly (or within 24 hours) of dosing. IF the cat vomits within an hour, then you have to give it again OR use something different since your cat may not be able to tolerate the med. Some other side effects are diarrhea and lethargy the first day or so. It seems to be quite safe with no long term ill effects AND is extremely effective and starts to kill fleas within 30 minutes and had a 98% effectiveness within four hours. I think the issue may be IF the cat chews it and is willing to eat it. Some kitties are very picky, as we all know. Ask the vet if you can pill the cat with the chew. I would think that should be fine.

I have used Program (for month long protection) along with Capstar (immediate flea killer that lasts only 24 hours) orally in the past. The nice thing about oral medication for fleas is that the cat can't lick the area or wipe at it with it's paw.

You may want to treat the home environment as well! Good luck.

Thank you Feralvr!

It is comforting to hear from someone who is successfully using this regiment. I have 4 kitties but one is a ferral that I brought in about a year ago. She was doing very well with her socializing process when the flea attack struck. Since she is ferral I can not touch her so I could not apply the back of the head medication like I can with the other 3.

The vet came to my house to apply advantage 2 originally but then switched her to oral "Program."  She will get one dose of Capstar tonight and then when the Comfortis arrives that also. The vet wants her on this regimen for 12 months.

I have been treating the entire house with various natural flea sprays as well as having hired an exterminator. There are 3 levels to my house. Two levels are now clean of fleas (trying to keep them that way) but the basement family room and laundry/furnace area are the las to yield.

I have had cats all my life but never have I ever had fleas. For anyone that has not experienced this do everything you can to not ever have to deal with fleas. Honesty, the experience and requirements to reverse the problem can be devastating to your daily life!

Thanks again Feralvr.

Oh, Yes, Feralvr, I see you are a feral lover. I should add then that unfortunately my sweet little feral Glenda was so frightened by the vet that she is back hiding in the basement again. She was doing so well with her 3 pals. I hope that in time she will forget her trauma and return to her happiness with all of us. I am very sad about this.

Glenda (what a darling name :)) WILL recover from the scary vet!! Feral kitties, even IF they become socialized with their one person and/or with the other cats in the home, will always revert back a few steps once they are frightened over something but they will always come back to the level that they were at rather quickly. As time goes on, the duration of needing to hide after being scared will become shorter and shorter.

And, yes, having to deal with fleas twice in my lifetime of cat's is more than enough! It is very exhausting (emotionally and physically :lol3:) trying to get rid of them. Thank goodness for all of the new flea products available to us nowadays. Years back, it was awful with only powders, shampoos and sprays. GOOD LUCK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, Feralvr,

I was successful getting Glenda to take Comfortis. I can not touch her so I prayed that I could get it in her with food. I mixed one tablet in the tuna juice along with some tune flakes. She ate it all up...Victory!

I was afraid that the tablets (which are a little bigger than pill size) had a strong flavor or smell so I tasted one. They have no flavor and no odor so they do not cause the kitty to reject the food it is mixed with.

Thanks for your help.

I've been battling fleas for two years where I never had a problem before. None of the topicals were working, but Comfortis cleared everyone up and I haven't seen a flea in weeks. I bought 3 of the larger size and cut them in half for the 6 kitties. I can't give it to my smaller dog as she had epilepsy so I put her on Zectra. Hope you have similar success.
