I have 2 beautiful fur babies, my younger one if a confirmed bengal-maine coon mix, but idk my 4 yr old. We've concluded that she was someone's kitten who hit lose and was picked up by the kill shelter we rescued her from. I'm think she is probably just a simple domestic short hair, but her spots are pretty consistent with the pattern of an Egyptian Mau, so maybe she is a mix? What do you guys think?

Thank you! That site was very interesting and informative....makes me wonder about my other cat....we know she is bengal/Maine coon, but her markings are VERY similar to that of the botched tabby, very very similar!

I think she is very unlikely to be a pure bred EM. I don't believe they usually have white colouring anywhere and they are a fairly rare well protected breed. So your cat would be described as a brown mackerel short hair tabby. She does however have particularly beautiful tabby markings which are pronounced and what seems to be a similar tone to the Mau. So if you want something to compare her to that would be the right breed.

Beautiful cat :)

Some others who may be more knowledgeable about the Mau breed might like to chip in.

Did you ever see your cat's mother/father/siblings or know their heritage?

Sorry a correction I see that they can have some white colouring!

The other thing to note is that most pure breds are often sold neutered and most breeders will take a kitten back if there are issues. So it is unlikely for a Mau to be a stray but definitely not out of the question. With all pure bred cats, they were originally domestic "moggies" or wild cats bred for certain traits to create a breed over time. So your cat does possess many of the characteristics of a Mau - she looks to possess a similar spotted/broken mackerel coat pattern and colour but does not seem to have the build that most Maus have.

I definitely don't think she is a purebred Mau, and she was clearly someone's pretty that maybe ran away because when we rescued her and took her to the vet, she didn't have the signs of a stay. She was 7 months with beautiful clean teeth and was already spayed. We think that she escaped her home and was just unfortunate enough to be picked up by the kill shelter. She is the sweetest thing, tiny, only 7 pounds. Very loving but skiddish too. No background on her like with my other one. Her markings are VERY consistent with the Mau, but with the tabby as well. She might be a mix but could just be a tabby that resembles a Mau. I just feel bad because I'm asked what kind my cats are and I know Kindle's breed and background, but I don't know Ember's....
