I have a kitten who according to my Vet is approx 9 weeks old. This was a stray that was found in a friends shed along with his Mama & siblings. He had his first set of kitten shots  about a week ago.  He was wormed at 5 weeks old when we first took him in.  This morning as I walked by his litter box I noticed his bowel movement was very mushy and looked to have some bright red blood in it.  He was still running around & acting very playful.  Later this afternoon he was in the living room & meowing very loudly.  My husband & I both went in the living room to him.  He was obviously in pain & dragging his back legs as if he couldn't walk on them.  We immediately assumed he had injured himself.  I have no Vets near me on Sundays & would have to drive an hour to the Animal hospital. Which I have done before & would if I felt the need.  I went back & looked at his litter box & noticed there was more bowel movements but these were def full blown diarrhea.  I called the Animal hospital.  She asked me if kitty was eating & drinking?  Yes. Was he vomiting?  No.  Lethargic?  No. not at all.  Kitty was wide eyed & appeared to be a perfectly happy normal kitty laying in his side with his head held up.  He just didn't want to walk.  He did meow loudly and seem to hurt if we picked him up.  Hospital said she could not make any promises without seeing kitty.  But she didn't think he seem to be in a life or

death situation.  She thought we could wait & see our Vet tomorrow.  Just watch for all the things I was asked.  She was thinking we were dealing with an injury or possibly he has ingested something that while it wasn't poisonous, just didn't agree with him.  We put him on a towel on the floor with food & water right next to him.  He ate & drank with much gusto but didn't want to move.  After a while I could tell he was wanting to go to his litter box but didn't want to use his hind legs.  Hubby scooped him up & put him in the box.  He meowed a lot & pooped liquid.  It had a lot of gas in it as well.

A few hours ago I went to check on him & he was up in my bed.  We were so excited because obviously his hind legs must have felt better.  We just let him rest.  About 30 min later he came up the steps.  He was moving slow & seem to still hurt but was using both back legs.  Now he is laying around a lot but walking when he has to.  Anyone have any guesses as to what is going on?  I am wondering if he had a stomach bug & his belly was just hurting really bad?  Maybe his rectum was sore from all the diarrhea.

I think this is 2 totally separate issues.

I think the kitten injured itself, possibly fell off of something higher up. He could have easily flipped off of someplace and landed funny. But it sounds like he is recovering now, in a couple days he should be back to his normal self.

The diarrhea is an issue, the blood indicates inflammation/irritation, so either he has a parasite, like coccidia, etc or he is food sensitive to what you are feeding him.

Grains will often do this.

He should be eating a high quality kitten food, dry and canned.

By the way, did you know he is a gorgeous cat? Snowshoe is my fave of all.

Yep, I know he is gorgeous!  I had wondered if it was 2 separate issues as well.  If the diarrhea is not better by tomorrow we are making a trip to my Vet.
