hey everyone! I'm new to the site! But I like what I've read so far. I just got a 5 month old tabby cat yesterday. His name is numbers. They gave us a dry bag of food from at the shelter. When we got home I put some food out and he ate some right away.he's had a bite here and there since then. But I'm not sure if he should be eating more. The bowl has been practically full since I first poured it. Maybe it's just because of the shock of the new house? He is pretty settled in though. Is canned food or dry food better for this age or a cat of any age? He has been staring at the dog food and even ate some. It seems like he might be craving something that is not in his food. I gave him a tiny bit of milk of which he had like 3 or 4 sips twice. Please help with advise or anything. I just don't know if this is normal.
~Thankyou!

Congratulations on bringing home Numbers from the shelter.  Cute name.

It is often traumatic for kittens and cats when they move in to a new home, and eating food can take a little time to settle down.  Be sure and leave his food where he can get to it easily, if possible in the room he feels safest in, along with some water.  Dog food is usually lower in protein and doesn't have the best balance of nutrients for cats, esp kittens so try to keep Numbers eating cat food if you can.

Generally wet food is best for cats of all ages as it tends to be higher in protein and helps them get enough water (many cats don't drink much and rely of fluids in their food).  Suddenly changing foods over is likely to upset a kitten's tummy though and if you do change over it is best to do it gradually over a week or so; this is why they shelter or people who adopt out kittens usually give you a little of the food they have been getting.    Hopefully as he settles in he will eat some more as long as it is in a place he can get to and feel safe.

There are many people on site who are much more experienced in cat nutrition than I am who I am sure will come in to give you more detailed advice on what's best to feed your kitten and how to approach changing over the food.

Very cute name indeed.

Kittens are usually good with adapting, but every cat is different. I think it may depend on which food you are giving him. You can try out different foods -

Though I believe that the food the shelter has given you is probably the food they were feeding him there, so he was probably eating it, so maybe he's still settling in. He should be fine.

Sorry, I'm not an expert in cat nutrition, but I hope that helps. :)
