Saving/managing new feral colony

I was just logging into TCS thinking "I wonder how Jenny is doing with her colony....?"

You've done a great job, really fast work! I'm so glad the little black kitten is going to have a home. Is it difficult getting permission to bring a kitten from France to the UK? Will he need to be quarantined?

Good luck with all the other cats that need to be TNR'd, you've certainly shown people that TNR is much more effective and humane than he other options they were considering.

Luckily, new rules say he doesn't have to be quarantined, coming from another EU country, just chipped and vaccinated, with a pet passport. So he is ready to travel and will leave here on Nov 16th.

Sweet, cuddly boy.  He looks lovely.      I hope his journey over to England is smooth and fast and he settles well in this new home of his.

AWWWWWWW !!!!!!!!!!!! :heart2: What a little sweetie pie. Amazing how some just immediately know how to melt into our arms and our hearts even coming from harsh beginning. for his upcoming travel. :cross:

I'm late to the party here - but as a fellow TNR proponent I understand the frustration. We have a lot of ongoing issues here too-from one neighbor who hides kittens, swears they're going to take them to be fixed, then a month or 2 later kittens "show up" pregnant or already delivered - since they feed also obviously it makes their "breeding efforts" very counterproductive to our TNR efforts....and one neighbor told us he heard another neighbor "bragging he'd poisoned several" last summer. And I feel like we're making headway -but MAN- I'm impressed with your quick catch skills! You should be very proud of yourself!!! And to have found a home for even one sweet kitten (& remember you've saved basically thousands of kittens from coming into a harsh world!) you should also be very proud!

Definitely keep us posted - & use this forum as a resource & support system. It's amazing!

LoL, his expression is like ' So what's the problem with me snuggling in here so fast?'        The dog is looking so adoringly at him, it looks as if the adoption has gone well.

YES!!! A bit of happy tears. What an absolute love of a kitty whom now has a very best friend. Heart warming to say the least. :heart2:

Well, the first new one of the year has arrived. I had a call last night that there was an unknown 'grey' cat in the village and I took down a trap. I was going to leave the trap open for a day or two, but the lady whose garden it was in called me this morning to say her husband had set it and the cat was in it this morning! He is really pretty (the cat, not the husband LOL) solid blue (I was expecting tabby) and about 5 months old. But very scared and untouchable. So I took him (we think he is male but not 100% sure) to the vet and I will get him back this evening. The village ladies I spoke to are quite happy about him joining the ones I caught last year in our little colony. Sadly one of the black males has not been seen for a month so something may have happened to him.

Yes, I was taken by surprise! Also, it turns out he is a she, and has now been spayed. I have transferred her to a cage in a quiet place and I will keep her four or five days to recuperate. Tomorrow, when she has calmed down a bit (I hope), I will take a photo. I didn't want to upset her any more tonight.

I must just add that this little one turned up about 3 weeks ago and been hanging around the gardens down in the village. The people there know she does not belong to any resident, so we think she was probably dumped. When she has calmed down I will see just how socialised she is and whether she really does belong in the colony or whether I can get her adopted.

She is definitely an abandoned housecat. She let me caress her head this afternoon and when I uncovered her cage she had no fear at all of being inside. I even tried her with some house noises, running water, the vacuum, the washing machine, and nothing fazed her. People do make me so angry. The vet realised it too and did not clip her ear, in case we can get her adopted. But that is going to be so hard - it was such a fluke finding a home for Merlin. I just hate the idea of putting her out to fend for herself a second time. No wonder she was so scared outside - it was not us she was frightened of, it was where she found herself.

It's heartbreaking at any time, but when they're known a home and don't know how to fend for themselves it's just horrendous.

Here's hoping she captures someone's heart.

I am asking everyone I meet! And yesterday the mother of my Saturday student said she had a friend who recently lost her cat through old age and she would ask her. So keep everything crossed.

The little one is still terrified but allowing me to touch her head without hissing or flinching. Not her body, though, and I think she is in pain from the op. Hopefully that will improve over the next few days.
