Hi,

My cat was on Natural Balance canned food. But last month his favourite flavours ran out of stock where I live, and the supplier said it will take a month to get them here.

So I switched to Applaws (chicken breast) + Applaws dry food (chicken also) for night time.

It is much expensive that Natural Balance, but this is the best I managed to find that does not have much grain (it says it only has 1% of rice, the rest if chicken and  water).

He has been consuming these for one month exactly.

And as I used to do before I feed him meow mix every now and then as a sort of treat, because even chicken and beef flavours  has fish broth, and you know cats love fish.

Today I noticed two things when I was petting my cat when he was sleeping. He has feline acne + gingivitis :(

(see my thread here: http://www.thecatsite.com/t/285711/oh-no-kittys-gum-look-red-and-see-pictures  )

I'm not saying that Applws caused this, but I was wondering if it has contributed to that?

Has anyone been used applaws for their cats? And how was it?

Thank you.

Is the acne on his chin? Do you use plastic food dish?

If you use plastic dishes, switch to porcelain, glass, or stainless. Make it shallow. Dab hydrogen peroxide on chin. Wash bowls after every feeding. I just got back from vet with my cat who had chin acne. Scab fell off and he started bleeding. I got antiobiotic shot for him and dab peroxide on his chin. I switched from deep metal dish to shallow porcelain dish. Some people feed on paper plate then throw plate away. This way cats chin never rubs on food dish.

Yes, it is on his chin. For his water I use a stainless steel bowl, for his wet food  I use a china saucer.

I used those disposable plastic dishes for his dry food, and change it almost daily.

Anyway, I'm not going to use those dishes anymore, and I already stopped the dry food last night. I could not get a good sleep because he kept meowing near my door. I woke up at dawn and gave him wet food.

I'm more worried about the gingivitis, applaws does not have any vitamins added to it, unlike Natural Balance which did.  Could that be a reason for the gingivitis?

Hydrogen peroxide? the same as the one used to bleach the hair?

Thank you.

Dilute the hydrogen peroxide with warm water, or use Spectrogel and rinse after. Dry food needs to be fed out of a proper dish for all the same reasons wet food does. Have a couple of stainless or ceramic dishes that you can alternate and wash them daily.

I would say NO - the type used for hair is much stronger & you get that at a beauty supply - the type you want is from the drug store

I just dip q tip in hydrogen peroxide & lightly dap his chin. If he has sore on chin take to vet for antibiotics and vet can look at his gums and tell you if he needs a dental cleaning.
