My male maine coon cat was in the vet for a couple days for a blockage he had to get cleared up.  The vet placed him on a Acidic Diet, dry food, and now he pooping quit a bit and is unfortunately tracking it around my house.  Could this be a reaction to the dry food diet or a reaction to the amoxicillin we have to give him twice a day?  And is there any store bought substitute we can give him other than the food the vet only provides?  I already have to pay a several hundred dollar vet bill and can't afford the dry food the vet wants him on.  Thank you

By blockage, do you mean he had a urinary tract infection? And if so, was a culture done--what kind of crystals. Was he totally blocked?
Yes the amoxcillin can cause a cat to poop more. NOTE that the definiton of diarrhea is not frequency, it is consistency.
I am not familar with Acidic diet dry food, is that the actual brand name of the food?
Personally I'm not in favor of prescription food but they are really necessary in some cases, at least in the beginning. I would ask your vet why he prescribe DRY food and not wet food. One of the key ingredients in getting a cat over a UTI and preventing future ones is water, water, water. Dry food is, well, drying.

He had mucus build up in his penis. There were no crystals found. The acidic diet isn't the name of the food it's what prevents crystals from developing. The vet wants him to eat a cup and a half twice a day of the dry food a day, cause he's a larger cat, and he barely eats half. We usually give him indoor car food cause he is strictly indoors. They did say we can get wet prescription food but that stuff is expensive.

Three cups of dry food is, in my opinion, a tremendous amount of food and calories.
I know prescription food is expensive, but honestly, I think the wet food in this case is worth the extra $.
What is the name of the food (brand)--do you live in the USA?

Here is a brief article about UTI/FLUTD.
Here is a thread about UTI--and there are many others.
Prescription food has it's place, but in my opinion, unless proven otherwise, it should be short term only.

That is an absurd amount of food. My cats live on 1/4 cup twice daily!

Yes an acidic diet is necessary to prevent further issues. Use that diet for about 2 months. After that you can switch to purina urinary tract food.

Most other cat foods are not acidic enough and that is what causes urinary problems to begin with! Purina is the only brand my cats haven't had urinary issues with. After my last expensive vet bill I swore I would keep them on purina. If they need extra protein I can always give some extra chicken.

The antibiotic can definitely cause digestive upsets.
