I was wondering if anyone has any advice on which canned or even dry food would be a good option for my kitten.

Here's a little history on her:

She started off eating Pro Plan kitten canned and Fancy Feast Turkey kitten canned but developed diarrhea and vomiting. She went to the vet and with some medication and I/D diet returned to her normal self. The vet said to swap her back to her food slowly.

I was feeding her some Nature's Variety Instinct raw duck and chicken. Then NV decided to mess everything up for cat lovers and no longer sells the big patties for cats. Now we have to pay 5x the amount for the small bag of bites. (What about adding taurine to the dog patties myself?) I had a couple of bags left so I started feeding her some Friskies cans in the mornings and raw in the afternoons. Keep in mind I have 5 cats so I need to consider the cost of their foods here..

A couple of days ago she's started to vomit and have diarrhea again so she's heading back to the vet today. It's looking very definitive that she has some type of food intolerance. I plan to give her probiotics once a day but I need a food that she can actually eat and won't hate that isn't likely to cause a repeat of her upset tummy. I've tried so many different cans of food it's not even funny. Most she doesn't seem to interested in.. She really doesn't like the I/D diet but she'll eat it if she has to...

Does anyone else have a cat with food issues like mine? What food worked for you? Do the limited ingredient versions of foods help?

She likes the Nature's Variety kibble food but I haven't tried the limited ingredient version because I don't know if it will do the trick. What do you think?

Honestly I just don't have time to start prepping raw foods myself. Besides that my husband would never go for the idea as he sees it as being more expensive than cat food (which it's probably not but good luck explaining that to a stubborn man lol).

Any advice is most appreciated!

You can feed the NV frozen raw medallions and patties - you just need to add taurine to it. You just sprinkle a little bit on top of the food. Dr. Lisa of Catinf.org recommends unflavored 2,000 mg tuarine either powdered or in a capsule that you can pull apart . She sources her taurine from iHerb.com but any vitamin or health store will have it.

Making your own raw food can actually be cheaper than buying commerical pet food. Here's a thread over on the raw diet forum about cost: http://www.thecatsite.com/t/282354/how-much-does-the-raw-diet-cost-you

I've heard that the CANNED Natures Variety limited ingredient food for dogs and cats is identical!, and at a quick glance I see that the dog version does include Taurine, but I did NOT check every ingredient word for word just now).  If that's true, then you could save money and buy the big cansof the DOG food, if you wanted to go that route.  I think lots of people use the limited ingredient food for 'tender tummies".

Of course, adding Taurine to the raw patties works too

thank you both for your advice.

I've ordered some Taurine and will sprinkle on the patties for now.

an update on the kitty..

the vet basically said we're going to try the same treatment as last time as he didn't find anything in the fecal sample and we know she didn't ingest anything she shouldn't have. he doesn't think she has food sensitivities because she's still just 7 months old. he said typically a cat is at least a year old before they start to develop them. i guess we'll play it by ear and see how things go..

I have to 100% disagree with your vet about your kitty being unable to have food intolerances at 7 months. My Max was 6 months at the onset of his allergies; and, I have another cat that did from the time I got him at about 12 weeks old (Simba is HIGHLY allergic to chicken/chicken products.) I had a few vets that told me Simba just had "a sensitive stomach" and to put him on IAMS Sensitive, etc...Sooooo not true! I did my own mini food trial with Simba since I suspected chicken. I put him on Gerber stage 2 Turkey & Gravy for 5 days. He did perfect. Tried the Chicken & Gravy on day 6 and started having projectile vomiting within seconds of eating the chicken (diarrhea soon followed.) Simba is now eating turkey and duck and is doing fabulous!

I feed Nature's Variety Instinct LID foods and my kitties with food intolerances are doing great.

I would suggest picking one protein/food for your girl and feed that to her for 4-6 weeks. If she does well with that, feed a different protein made by the same company (i.e. Instinct LID turkey for 6 wks, then try the LID duck, etc...) I believe most of the raw formulas have more than 1 protein source.

That's an awesome suggestion! Thank you for sharing your experience with me. She was doing perfectly well with the duck raw diet.. I'll keep her on the I/D food for the weekend and pick up some LID turkey or Duck on Monday and give your method a go.

It's just frustrating because once the diarrhea starts it doesn't seem to stop without the meds.. :(

Yes my girl had issues with vomiting. This is what she eats now withNO vomiting. She was a daily vomiter. First I took away dry. Second I bought something called Vets Best Hairball Relief Tabs (very inexpensive) sold on amazon. Com. Cats love the taste and eat like treats. It is all natural slippery elm and psyllium. The food went to No grain, no useless veggies. Friskies has rice. You can first try all wet no grain additive foods like merrick chicken or duck pate, if that does not work move to nutro natural choice chunky chicken or turkey loaf(this has no grain AND no carageen. If that does not work add the vets best remedy mentioned above. My cat eats the merrick pate (no fish) and the nutro chunky loaf (no fish) and takes a vets best tab 1/2 tab twice a day. No vomiting now for over a month. I feed her separate from other cat. I believe she had an intolerance to dry, grain, fish, beef, useless veggies. I also believe she needed help with digestion. If you must put down dry for others put where she cannot get at it since you need to determine what makes her sick. I also had my cat wormed just in case, even though nothing showed in stools and I give her revolution drops between shoulders for flea and worms only because she has been known to catch mice.

Thanks for the suggestions. It's good to know that there are other options out there. I'll keep you posted on what worked out for me. Her diarrhea hasn't cleared up with the meds she was given so it has to be either the food or something more serious that needs further vet testing..

I'll pick up some food from the pet store today and see how she does on that in the next couple of days.

Wish me luck!
