Ringworm

Hello. My vet thought my cat caught ringworm from another cat who had it. He had some spots on him that looked liked it so we treated him with oral and topical medication. My vet also took a culture and sent it out. I took my cat back to the vet yesterday (after 3 weeks) and they said spots look great, but took another culture just to be sure. Well they called me today and said the first culture finally came back and it was negative. Now I'm wondering if my cat had ringworm at all? Do you think I should keep him separate still until the next culture comes back or would it be ok to let him out since the first one came back negative? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

Usually vet's will treat the ringworm under suspicion while they send out that culture. BUT usually it comes back within seven to ten days, not three weeks later. IF it was negative, then it means no ringworm. I would think if you are seeing the spots healing and no more growing/spreading, then I think it would be alright to let your cat out of confinement. Just to be sure, I would make a quick call to your vet and ask too. But, if it were me, negative means no ringworm and I would stop the medication. Again, ask the vet though. :vibes::vibes::vibes:

Thank you for your reply. I had been calling my vet for days and asking about the culture and they kept telling me the place they sent it to still hadn't gotten back to them. So I took my cat for the follow up visit like I was suppose to and pay another $130 for another culture and the day after they call and tell me the first one was negative. I called my vet and a couple others and explained my situation and decided to let him out. I have to say, I am a little annoyed that the day after I pay for another culture, the first one finally came back. I don't know if that was coincidence or what, but it made me think. This is my first experience with this vet. Thanks again for your response.

I would be a bit miffed as well on that one. Really, there was no need for another culture to be done until the first one came back. I think they should give you a credit!!!!!!!!! Or at the very least, the vet should explain himself on that one to you personally. Make sure you still get the results from that culture AND a copy of the test results - BOTH of them. You will want to have those in your file at home and this will also assure you that they even ran the second test. Stay on them for this! And, if you are not happy, find a different vet since this was your first visit with this one anyway.

Hope your kitty is doing better and stays that way. :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:
