Hi all! I'm new here and a new cat owner! We went to Petsmart looking for a toy for a friend's dog and left with 2 cats. 2yo male and 9mo female. All was well until a few days ago. They both love to hide under our bed. The other day they were under there and I lifted the dust ruffle to look for something when the most foul poop smell hit me like a truck. I removed the mattress and box spring, even pulled the fabric lining off of the box spring to be extra certain I wasn't missing anything. I was running late for work and had to leave it at that and when I got home the smell was gone. Well, it just happened again. I couldn't remove the mattress because bf is asleep on it but I did look under the bed with a flash light. Again, I can't see a thing. Is it possible that one of them just has horrid gas? If so what can I do about it? They currently eat the dry food that we were given when we took them home but I'm transitioning them to wet food (trader joes brand with no by-products). So far the transitioning isn't helping! I can't take this. It's worse than when my bf and sons hit Taco Bell. Yeah...THAT bad! I'm afraid the smell is going to absorb into the carpet or box spring. As far as I know we haven't had any accidents so far and we scoop their box out 2x every day.

It might be the dry food. My 2 had the same issue when I brought them home from the shelter. The smell from their gas and poop could clear out a roomful of buzzards. They had been eating Science Diet dry. The problem cleared up once they went to an all wet diet. The smell now is minimal at most.

Emily has amazingly horrible smelling gas. It's shocking.

They make some treats that are advertised to alleviate stinky poo/gas. You might also consider offering some catnip. I think once they are eating all wet the smell will be less.

We found that taking away Emily's wheat grass helped. (Which was very sad, she loves her grass.) Wet food helped. We rarely have "open window drills" anymore, but every other week or so we get a wiff of Emily... but it's not nearly as strong.

We had one eventful night where we were hanging out the windows, gagging, lol. How can a cat so small make a smell so terrible??? I hope you find the cause/solution. Have you had these cats examined by your vet?

One of our 10-month-old kittens had very smelly gas when we adopted them, too! Hers cleared up, too, once they were on a diet of all wet and raw foods. With that combination, their litter boxes don't even really smell now, which is a nice bonus! Good luck Kat0121!
