my cat Teddy is 4 years old and his whiskers keep breaking off! They are not being cut off. Because I have acutally seen them bent and hanging on a bit, then later the piece is gone and it's a broken or shredded stub. At first it was just one, and I wasn't concerned. But now it's 4 or so of them. I am wondering why this is happening ? Generally he seems in good health. His fur is nice and healthy. he itches a lot (no fleas or mites that I am aware  and he was already treated with Advantage). He scratches and itches a lot like he has bugs but other than that ,nothing strange.

Have you had him checked for allergies? Sometimes that can cause itching. It's possible that he's breaking off his own whiskers when he's scratching, although if you have seen it happening I don't know how you could tell. Do you have any other animals in the house?

What size dishes do you use for feeding? A wide flat dish is better than a smaller deep dish because the whiskers don't touch the sides. If his whiskers are getting bent every time he eats that could eventually weaken them.
